After waiting more than a year to find the Armalite M15A2 or waiting for Colt to actually produce their new AR15A4, I finally have found what I am looking for. The good folks at BCM told me they could sell me the standard 20 inch upper, handguards, bolt carrier, and charging handle and that Ranier Arms should have some complete BCM A2 lowers for sale, and then I would have the complete A4 rifle that they occaisionally produce. They were right and I bit the bullet and ordered all of it. A day later Bravo Company had their carry handles back in stock so I nabbed one of those up too. Apparently BCM and Armalite only make a few of the complete rifles a year because their is a much higher demand for the carbine or mid-length rifles. I originally wanted the upper that had the carry handle permanently attached, but I have become more than willing to comprimise. I never realized until a couple of years ago how hard it was to find a 20 inch rifle without a heavy barrel. I have an old triangular handguard that I am getting cerekoted black and I will post pictures as soon as I get everything.

Sounds like it will be a nice build. We definitely require pictures! I'm about to start ordering parts for a basic A2 build myself.

Delton makes a nice 20" gov profile, but mine is not chrome lined or 1/7. Still it functions 100% for me and is very accurate. I would like to build an A1 clone but with 1/9 twist. ( or 1/8 match grade pencil barrel how cool would that be.)

I have a PSA 20" upper that uses a FN barrel just like the GI rifles. It has been a great rifle. Highly recommended. Now what I really want is a barrel with the A1 "pencil" profile, only with 1/7 or 1/8 twist.

henschman, There's always the option to buy a stand govt profile 20" bbl and have it turned down to the contour you want. On that note, stop giving me ideas. :uhoh:

You should have a pretty sweet rifle when you're done. Tacticool-ness (and practicality, in some cases) aside, I still think the classic 20" barrel and triangle handguard look is my favorite.

Awesome. My next AR is going to be a 20 inch. I'm just not sure if I want an A4 build like I carried most of my military career or the SDM-R I carried for my second tour. Either way I like the rifle better than the carbine.

Go for it. Build your own. I built my Service rifle.

Palmetto State Armory lower receiver and LPK
Model 1 Sales A2 stock kit
Spikes upper receiver
Palmetto Premium BCG, MP stamped bolt
Cardinal forge carry handle
DPMS National Match free float hand guard (pic shows old handguard)
Armalite clamp on National Match front sight post
Criterion barrel, stainless steel, 1:8, 223 wylde
edit: Geissele SSA
edit: It now has at milspec trigger guard.

It shoots MOA

gotigers - what's the profile on that barrel?
I want an A4 20" rifle, but I may want to go a little heavier than a gov't profile.

I want to build this same rifle. The M-16A1 with a thin 20" barrel in 1/9 twist. Just like I had in the 1970's. kwg

I've seen retro style uppers and lowers advertised by Spud-NoDak. Fyi.

Service

Henschman: Pretty rifle but not a "Service Rifle".

This is a service rifle. Very similar to my own. Colt Match Target HBar 20". Mine is free floated with the DPMS handguard/tube.

Nice service rifles everyone. OP, get your pics up. :D

Here is how I went about getting my service rifle: Ordered an el-cheapo lower from AIM, ordered the service rifle upper, lpk, stock and Geissele trigger from White Oak. Then I waited 3+ months for it all to come in (and that was before Newtown).

Here is a pic of it the day the upper finally arrived.

It is an HBAR/heavy profile.

I don't think the OP means "service rifle" as in the NRA high power class... more like replicating the actual M-16 service rifle, with a GI profile barrel and all.

I wish I had thought of sending my A2 profile barrel off to Adco to trim it down after the gas block back when I was installing the FF handguard. I already had the barrel nut off and everything -- it would have been easy. I might still do that. A 20" CL 1/7 barrel in basically A1 profile made by FN is almost too cool to say no to!

I finally got all of my parts and put it together. I put the Magpul A2 replacement stock on it and the magpul rifle length handguards. I will post pics tomorrow. I have the triangular grip and the original A2 stock but it was a dull gray. I think I'm going to get my buddy cerekote the triangular handguards and stock in od green and put them on it. That is if I can pull the magpul forend back off. Those things go on super tight.

To me the goal would be to get the 20" velocity, and sight radius and yet still have a lightweight weapon.

Well I changed my mind already. I put the triangular handguards back on and left the magpul a2 replacement stock on. The upper and lower are from BCM. Stock is from magpul, Handguards are a pulloff of old Armalite, and Bolt carrier assembly and charging handle are BCM. Tell me what you think. Leave the Magpul stock on or go all the way retro?

What's more comfortable and functional for you? If you like the Magpul stock, leave it. If you like the standard stock better, switch it.

It's gov't profile barrel, right?
I've been thinking about building a 20" AR. But if I do, I may just go the same route you did and go with a BCM complete upper/complete lower snap-together build.

Yes. BCM is the only upper I could find with the rifle length that wasn't HBAR. I like the original stock but it is ugly gray and doesn't really match anything. I like the triangular handguards better than the magpul though. They just give it that tough look
