After a LONG dry spell of not harvesting a buck with a gun(I'm more than happy to harvest a doe for the meat), I finally harvested one this year!
After sitting in my spot for a while, some crunching leaves alerted me to this guy and 4 does about 120yds away coming down the hill towards me. They slowly made their way closer (probably 2 minutes, felt like 20) and after passing on a few iffy moving shots, he stopped in an opening at about 30 yds perfectly broadside. Put the cross hairs where they needed to be and let my Marlin 45-70 Guide gun bark! He mule kicked, and ran 20 yds uphill at a dead sprint face first into a tree, hit the ground, and didn't move again! I was SO EXCITED!
While field dressing him, I found the top 1/4 of the heart was disconnected from the rest, and the lungs were jelly. Very happy with the performance of the 300gr interlock going 1900fps muzzle velocity! Went through shoulder, ribs, vitals, ribs, shoulder, and found the bullet right under the skin on the off side shoulder. After cleaning the bullet, I weighed it at 264.4gr. 88% weight retention and a full mushroom is pretty darn good for a 30 yd shot!
Now after my hunting story, I'll share the good part, the pics!
