Been trying to fill holes in my collection, and a 1911 is in order.

I am not looking for a $4000 custom pistol I'm going to wrap in a diaper and sit and stare at, this will be shot, potentially a lot.

I came across the Remington 1911 R1 Enhanced in Stainless for $709. Will this be a nice, reliable addition for me? Or something that will give me nothing but trouble?

Thanks!

I have not heard anything bad about the Remington R1 but I don't know anyone who owns one either, just what I read.

Before you decide take a look at the Springfield Range Officer. It has a similar low price and I have shot several. I like them a lot and all were reliable with a bunch of different ammo.

I've had a basic Remington R1 since 2011. It has gone bang every time I've pulled the trigger and ejected all the shells. The initially creepy type 80 trigger has improved considerably as parts have worn in/self polished. No complaints about accuracy. It is picky about magazines so I only use Remington branded ones.

My experience with several brands of 1911s purchased new over the last five years or so is that they are very reliable as long as you use magazines they like. I'm talking Remington, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Colt and Rock Island.

Another vote for the Springfield RO. I have two: a .45 and a 9mm. The 9 is one of my favorite pistols to shoot, and I have a bunch of pistols. ;)

I just got a Colt Government stainless, also in 9mm. I haven't shot it yet, but it's a great looking handgun. Fit and finish are great, and all the controls are very crisp and smooth.

I pick up this same one a few moths ago. It functions great for me.

I've heard great things about the R1 enhanced. Springfield Loaded is also nice for around the same price

I shoot with a friend that shoots a R1 Enhanced. Great pistol, had a few problems initially, but has been running fine the last couple of months.
I have several 1911s, some a bit more expensive than the R1, and have been shooting them for 50yrs. If I were buying a 1911 in the price range of the R1, it would be the Ruger 1911. Actually, I think it's a bit less expensive. I don't own one, but there are three shooters that I normally squad wit that do. From what I've seen and experienced, they are the a great pistol. They are a 70 series type pistol as well. The Ruger IMO, is the best thing going in 1911s in this price range.

I've gotten two "basic" 1911's in the last few weeks for about $700.00 total.

The first, a more or less basic GI model, made by Tisas in Turkey, I paid about $300.00 (used). It's in 45 ACP. I have only put about 100 rounds through it, but it hasn't malfunctioned yet. It came with an 8 round magazine, and I picked up a couple of seven round mags (ex GI maybe?) for it. All three work just fine in my limited shooting. It seems to be a solid, well made gun. It shoots a bit low on the sights, meaning rather than my normal 6 O'clock hold, I have to hold dead on. The trigger is heavy, but I've used worse. It doesn't seem so bad when I'm at the range.

The other one is a Metro Arms, "American Classic II" in 9mm, made in the Philippines. This one is a bit more "upfeatured" having an extended slide release, extended safety, lowered ejection port, beavertail grip safety, three dot sights and skeletonized trigger and safety. Again, about 100 rounds through it, no malfunctions. This one is extremely "slick." The trigger is very nice. It is a very nice looking gun. I paid about $400.00 for this one. Both guns were purchased used.

Only time will tell how they hold up, but I see no reason to think they won't.

Here is a Wilson Combat I carry daily. As you can see it is not wrapped in a diaper but in a Raven Concealment Hackathorn holster.Carried every day and shot in USPSA and IDPA.Made right here in America from forged steel parts by Americans.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a Wilson Combat, but $3000 for one firearm is just not something I can justify. If I shot competitions maybe.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I am looking into the ones mentioned above.

My take on this and I am not a snob or afficianado is get a basic Colt. Your first / only 1911 should have a pony and they are good guns.

I've had everything from Norinco to Springfield to Kimber and Colt and my advise would be to get the best you can, which is probably a basic Colt.

I plan on getting a WC or Ed Brown in the next 6 months, and if I do there will be lots of "looking" and shooting! :)

Grab a gun has the Ruger SR1911 for 672.35 shipped to your FFL. I like mine quite a bit.

A friend has a Ruger and he us very happy with it. He likes the trigger and it's a Series 70 clone. You got a great deal, congratulations.

I think you'll be happy with the Ruger. My first 1911 was a Springfield and I have several Colts, but I really like my Ruger Lightweight Commander. Ruger makes a lot of 1911 for the money.

Is there really that much more recoil from the slightly lighter 1911? I have never shot a 1911 with an aluminum frame and I'm thinking there can't be much more felt recoil.

Not really. It's a little more than with a steel-framed gun, but it's no big deal. A Lightweight Commander weighs virtually the same as other common alloy- or polymer-framed .45s - it's with the G21, P220, HK45, and probably others right around 30 ounces - and I never hear folks complaining about the recoil on any of them.

I can't comment on the recoil of the commanders, but my Gen 4 G21 vs my Ruger SR1911FS, the G21 has less flip than the Ruger, but I still prefer the Ruger.

I have the SR1911 Commander in both the stainless and lightweight versions. They've been fantastic, and I don't remember either having a malfunction. It's a great choice. I don't notice a difference in recoil between the two, but I can carry the lightweight version comfortably while the stainless is too heavy to carry, for me, anyway.
