Ordered 6/24/09, delivered 11/20/09.

I ordered small rifle, small & large pistol (had a cabela's gift certificate).

I got single shipment of 1000 CCI small rifle. Other primers are schedules to show up sometime in January.

There is hope (for those of us who don't want to pay extra)...

I'm still waiting from some ammo ordered from them on September 28, using a discount coupon. They originally said October 10, then that was changed to November 10, and their current guess is December 15. I think I could get an estimate equally accurate throwing darts at a calendar.

Obama was elected over a year ago and somehow this shortage manages to go on & on & on. It's unbelievable. I guess I should try to look at the silver lining here, the unprecedented sales of guns & ammo should have clearly shown Obama and every other politician that attacking gun rights is a form of political suicide, especially when most are facing a "bitter" bunch of gun-owning voters next year to keep their job.

I'm glad to hear that something is moving within the Cabela's ordering system. I ordered a bunch of primers from them last June. For a while, they periodically sent a note, pushing estimated delivery out another month each time. (Which they've quit doing.) However, a couple of recent phone calls affirm that I am still "in the loop." So, I guess I just need to continue to exercise patience...

Yes, this whole Obama thing is indeed a great irritant to many of us.

Since you two are buying primers, you'd be handloaders and I'm told by some handloaders how they are immune from ammo shortages. That doesn't quite seem to be true. Less subject to ammo shortages, but still definitely not immune as proven by you two who can't very well load ammo without primers, a problem I've read about from other handloaders as well.

I ordered ammo from Cabelas in October with 4-week backorder.

That was 6-weeks ago. Starting to get a little peeved at Cabelas.

I've just gotten the large rifle and small rifle primers I ordered from Cabelas on April 30th. I'm still waiting on the large pistol. Luckily I haven't been out of any of them through this whole time. It seems like the primers have been more prone to "hoarding" than the powder or other components.

KJS --
...I'm told by some handloaders how they are immune from ammo shortages.

I know of no way one would be immune from such shortages without somehow having an uninterruptable supply of the needed components. I am indeed fortunate to have on hand a good supply of what I need to reload for the foreseeable near future, but if it's all going out, and little or nothing is coming in, the proverbial bottom of the barrel shows its face somewhere along the line.

Steve -- Who knows? You may end up getting your stuff before I do. And that would be a good thing for you. ;)

I got 1000 Win large pistol primers from Cabelas on 19-Nov-09 (ordered 30-Apr-09). I ordered small pistol primers at the same time, but they are still back-ordered.

I'm guessing that the shortages that we've seen in the last year will likely prompt many high-volume shooters to stockpile more than they immediately need since they've seen that shortages can happen and they can last for a considerable length of time. Of course, such stockpiling has the negative effect of prolonging any shortage.

One question about primers: is the reason they're so hard to get because when supply is tight primers will go to ammunition makers first and anything left goes to handloaders? I'm just guessing the big boys who buy primers by the truckload get top priority.

I had ordered Winchester Small Rifle Primers from Cabelas back in April, must have got mine from the same shipment this week that DHJenkins did.
It has been so long that I nearly forgot about them. I have had some success scouring stores all over Ohio to make up the difference.

The Cabela's in Austin finally got some. I was down there last Saturday and picked some up. That's the first rifle primers I've seen in store in probably a year. I lucked out that they had some and I've been too poor to place a big enough order to make it worth the hazmat fee. They had CCI shotgun, pistol and "benchrest" large rifle . No Large Rifle Magnum, but I'll take what I can get. They also had Remington 7 1/2 small rifle. I picked up a case of the large rifle for myself, another for my father, as well as a box of the small rifle. I've been in a reloading frenzy all week! lol At this rate, I had better go order myself another case... doesn't look like this one will last long.

I recieved 3000 SPPs in June and immediately ordered another 3K from MidWest and ordered 3K from Grafs in Oct---no luck yet.

Bullets are slow but do come--'Zero bullets' is taking 4wks on my last order, Montana Gold is some faster. I've got powder and it's also available.

I'm getting seriously worried about running out of SPPs.

When I finally awoke to this debacle, I ordered a case each of Win SP, LP, LR, and LRM from Cabels in April. I kept receiving notes to call and let them know if I still wanted them. I told them to just keep them on backorder. I received the SPs and LR's last week. The rest are due in January. They only charge one Hazmat fee on split orders. I had no problem with waiting. Just backorder and repeat as necessary.

There is no reason to get angry with Cabelas. They do not control the supply. At the beginning of this forum there is a section about where primers are available. I have found that to be very helpful and thank the folks that posted there. During this time we have ordered primers from Graf, Midway, and Wiedners. Powder Valley primers available as well, but I have not used them. Just shop around and check their web sites periodically. You'll find them.

As to hoarding I do not intend to get caught short like this again and will stock up on reloading supplies as I think necessary and prudent. I enjoy the shooting sports very much and hate interruptions. The upside of all of this is that received an education on cast bullets. They are economical and accurate and nothing like my experience with factory lead 45 colt ammo. I now shoot cast for all my handgun target and action shooting and am thinking about changing out the barrel in the Glock. Thanks Missouri!

Have fun guys.

I found some primers today too. But the shop only had 2 K, so I left one there. There's a lot of reloaders around here and I didn't want to take them all. However when he gets his next order in I'll be first on line.

Our American manufactures choose to limit the supply...I hate to say it, but Wolf primers are looking better everyday, even if they are Russian.

I'm amazed at how many people purchase primers on line.....and wait for months to take delivery. While many were lamenting the shortage of on-line suppliers, the brick & mortar establishments seemed more reliable.

pff primer shortages, i ran out of 22lr and all i had sitting round was some 357 mag. but no primers.
went to ACE home center bought box of strike anywhere matches, shaved the head of the matches off made my own primer. shot and butchered one of our shep with it.
thats the beauty of handloading guys, you can still most of time get by

Well, for those of us who are cheap SOB's, it's about the price. Local shops have been selling 1k of SPP for about $40. The primers I order in April, that just came in, I paid $22 for 1k, hazmat & shipping included. Until they came in, I've bought a couple 1000 locally, but also cut way back on my shooting.

I'm a handloader, and I'm still stocked from the primers I bought in response to the shortage before the shortage before the last shortage.

I feel somewhat immune.

Gotta be careful with your storage though.
Fire code does set limits on how many primers, and how much powder you can store.
You can never be immune from the Fire Marshal.

If it helps you guys any at all....I had ordered 20,000 small pistol primers from Cabelas back in march. By June they still had not arrived. I changed that order to have 20,000 small pistol primers for every brand of primers they carried so that no matter what manufacturer they got primers from I would get at least 20,000. I shut the back order down the last week of August when I accepted my third order of 20,000. Most of the ones I have are magtec. I have a few remington small pistol primers also. I hope this helps you guys on how to get an order filled for primers from cabelas.
Since I live in georgia I can not order from natchezz as they do not sell to the state of GA. I guess they have distributors in GA.
