I know we had a couple of .44 Spl threads recently, those got me pining for a flattop .44 Spl. Blackhawk. I have a 4 5/8” Vaquero in .45 Colt and a .22 Wrangler, and a 6.5” Single six .22, but I like the mid-sized barrels on SA guns, they just sing to me.

Watching GB for a little while took me to a gently used 5.5” Lipseys model, and amazingly enough I posted the high bid and won it. I bought some grip panels in walnut burl from Chiggs Grips as I waited the ten days Sacramento mandates (for the children, of course!) I popped the grips on the day the gun came home... and then had to wait weeks to get a chance to shoot. :(

I finally shot it today with three loads at 15 yards using Starline brass, Fed primers and IMR Target powder;, an MBC coated 165 gr TCFP over 5.6 gr, an Eggleston coated 200 gr RNFP over 5.6 gr., and a 240 gr plated target HP from Berrys over 5.0 gr.

For my first time shooting a centerfire Ruger SA revolver with adjustable sights I was really amazed that it hit pretty much POA at 15 yds. with all three of these loads. No adjustments were made at all and the shots hit right about the black for all 12 shots fired at each target. Recoil was very manageable, as these were mid-range loads well under the “Skeeter load” power level.

I’m no Michulek, that’s for sure! My first shot or two was low with the 165 and 200 gr loads, the 240 grain load I sort of overcompensated and went high on shot #1.

All in all I had a great time escaping the house to pull the trigger for only the second time since March. The .44 Spl. has always been a favorite of mine, and this Blackhawk really did exceed my expectations. I was always a DA revolver guy, but I’ll admit I’m now hooked on these Blackhawk SA guns for sure. :)

Stay safe.

Only one step left.. Full Skeeter!!!!

Hi...
The flat top Blackhawk in .44Spl with a 5-1/2" barrel is a really neat revolver.

I like mine so much that I bought another one so I would have a matched set.

Both of mine are blued models. I am seriously considering hunting down a stainless steel model. I don't really need another .44Spl...I have four currently but when did "need" ever enter into the discussion???

Might as well show you mine too!
Awesome grips on yours I’m planning to get a pair from chigs. I love how you buy the blank and he makes the grips to order. As for single actions, they do have a certain allure to them. I’m already thinking about a 45acp/45 colt conversion Blackhawk with the 4.25” barrel.
First things first holster, bullet mold, grips for my 44.
