If any of you remember my former posts, I had been looking to buy a stripped AR lower receiver to mate to my 16'' BCM midlength upper (5.56). I was unable to buy because I was not aware of the federal law regarding that you must be 21 to purchase just the lower receiver. Obviously I was disappointed. Idaho law allows one to purchase handguns and receivers in FTF transaction at the age of 18. I had the option of waiting until April of 2011 for my 21st birthday to order a lower, or I just keep my eyes open on the states internet classifieds.

The other day (I think it is the post about GP AR's) I sort of mentioned my upper and that I need a lower. Luck had it that I checked the classifieds and a complete SI Defense lower with DPMS parts kit was for sale. It was not a stellar deal but instant gratification truly trumps bargains when you have to wait another 7 months before getting my hands on a lower. I called the gentleman selling it and paid for it FTF the next day (today). I met him at Blackhawk Industries in Meridian, it sounded familiar but I wasn't sure if it was the holster/sling/tactical gear manufacturer. Turns out it was, he let me take a look inside and of course I was giddy with excitement. Myself in a building filled with shooting accessories and equipment = "a kid in a candy store." I was not given a tour, just an introduction and he mentioned that they had some temp. jobs, but this is getting way off topic. Just thought I would share my days excitement.

Now, the pic's!

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the finish matches. I was afraid the lower would be too glossy.

Parts are:
16'' BCM middy upper w/ BCM bolt
Cavalry Arms Midlength handguards
Magpul MBUS Rear sight
The stock A2 grip and rifle stock came with the gun, but I am keeping them for a National Match build in the future.

I cannot wait to go shoot the ever living lead out of this thing. It has been waiting for far too long. I will update with a range report which will hopefully be soon and after I add my accessories (MOE Grip, MOE Stock).

Eventually I will add a Troy TRX Extreme 11'' tube with either a Troy HK style front BUIS or a Magpul front sight.
**Oh and I apologize for the cell phone pics, I lost my camera.

wow !! now thats NICE, i like to see standard stocks on middys.

BTW.

happy birthday

No its not my birthday, I mentioned its in April. I just got lucky that I found a FTF deal. I guess its an early birthday present, but I still have to get that 1911 on my birthday.

I don't mind the full stock, I have grown up with them but I really prefer the adjustable stocks. Once that MOE goes on there I think it will look even better. Oh and the Troy forend and BUIS and maybe a QD scope mount and......... These things are addicting. When I got home and mated the receivers I just couldn't put it down.

I was really excited when I saw that it was a SI Defense lower, they make some really great stuff but I don't know if this is one of their forged or billet lowers. If its billet I think I got a pretty good deal, if it was one of the forged ones they were selling at $50 last December, well I try not to think about that.

Is there any way I can tell if it's billet compared to forged? Right now I am not going to worry about accessories and just buy mags and ammo for it.

**This is sort of how I want it to end up, except without the SS barrel and muzzle brake. I think I will probably go with a Vortex flash hider so I can QD a Smith suppressor, but this is all down the road. I still need to find work and buy different guns.

funny, I have the opposite problem while living in the same area(complete lower needing an upper but not alot of $$$). if I had seen your previous post before I may have been able to help.

on another note, I believe your lower is forged.

Zanad, so far the best values in uppers I think are the Spike's Tactical. BCM is exceptional but priced a little higher my upper was $475(??) and the bolt was $130. I think Spikes has mil spec bolts too and their uppers cost around $535

I went with BCM just because they are more proven and well regarded around here.

**I also believe you are right about it being forged. On the SI website, the billet have the trigger guard machined on and the forged have no trigger guard.

Go to BCM website. They have a sale on uppers for I believe $395 and then you can add a complete BCG for like $110. Right now you can get a complete, top of the line, upper for about 500 bucks.

I got my parts for the adjustable stock today. So I got to work on it immediately and now it looks like this:

Once again, sorry for the cruddy pics. One time I will have to stop spending my money on ammo and accessories and get a decent camera.

The MOE grip had a little too much material on the inside so it wouldn't even wiggle on. I had to do some sanding and I really had to push to get the grip on there all the way. I don't think it even needs a screw, thats how tight it is. I like the MOE stock but I should have saved a little more for the CTR because the wiggle on the MOE can be a little annoying.

I will have a range report very soon. Hopefully by friday if the lady friend doesn't want to do anything. All I have to shoot is Federal 100 round 55gr .223 from walmart. I might pick up some Hornady match if any local stores carry it.

I also need to zero in the rifle. What's the battle zero? Is it 25/200 yards? and do I need the special tool to adjust the front post or can I use another common tool that I can get at a hardware store?

Thanks everyone, just gotta lube it up again and the brass will be flyin!

IDK about 'battle' zero, but 50y/200y works great in mine. (25 is too close)

You can adjust the front post with a bullet tip if you're not in a hurry, but a front sight tool is handy (not a hardware store part, unless you're in Texas).

Get yerself a sling (I like the cheap G.I. web slings from appleseed), and get some rounds downrange.

Thanks for the recommendation. I now know about the difficulty of inserting a full 30 round mag on a closed bolt, I dinged up a case in the process. I just heard of people mentioning a "battle zero" but 5.56 is a flat shooting round so I guess I will go with the 50yard zero.

I need a job soon, the AR bug has bit me!
