Finally saw a Hi Point in person

Was at a wedding in Jonesboro Arkansas last weekend and went into a grocery store called Giant Eagle as I recall. It had a gunshop section in the store. This was quite a shock for a Yankee. Wish our Farmer Jack sold guns. The store had a Hi Point 45 for $159. It was without a doubt the ugliest gun I had ever seen. It was even uglier in person than in the many posts on the subject.

I really don't understand the obsession with Hi-Points, when there are quality Makarovs and used revolvers laying around everywhere.

I don't understand this apparent attitude, though, that seems to be along the lines of:

"I don't like Hi-Points. They're ugly, not beautiful like my Glocks. I hope nobody ever buys one and they go out of business. Take that, Hi-Point! In your face! You deserve it for making a gun that I don't like!"

I'm not referring to the two above posters or anyone in particular, it's just a vibe I've picked up. At least Hi-Point stands behind their product; they have one of the best warranties I've seen. So why the loathing and anger?

this one guy hangs out with a shooting bro of mine who has a Hi-Point 9mm.........2XL-butt ugly but man can he shoot that thing!!! This guy is dead on with that friggin thing. I have never seen it jam. We tried to take it apart once but after q 1/2 hour or so but gave up. Best to just keep shooting it we decided.

Did this guy pick up my P7 for the first time and shoot just as well?--yes

Yes, They are ugly but they work. Nobody said that they were a collectors piece.

ps. Just look at all those Smiths sitting in the shops nowadays. If they are so great why are they just sitting there? My gun dealer said that he couldnt give them away. I guess that the price you pay for selling out to big brother.

I have a friend that keeps one with him when fishing the creeks. He uses it to keep the snakes away from the boat. The last time I was with him we had a Cotton mouth, every bit of six foot long, heading our direction. He shoot at it a couple of times and it turned and went the other way. Yes, a shotgun would be better, but who whant to take one in a John boat. Anyway, my point is if something happened and he dropped it in the water it's not like he lost a Glock or Springfield. The guns have a purpose. One of thier purposes is to be one of the ugliest guns made. The other is to have something over having nothing.

God are they ugly...but heck for a throw away gun why not. One that is known to be atleast somewhat reliable, throw it in the glove box and forget about it...shoot it once in a while. if it breaks buy a new one . kinda like with headers on my car by pacesetter. they are around 150 when the normal hotshot headers are 450. only bad thing is the pacesetter rusts out in a few years. so what, you got your money's worth. replace them for 3 times and you get the life of the car basicly.

and well id still like to see a hi point carbine in person...they sound decent. and well no one can dispute the great service you get from hi point

Honestly, I've never personally witnessed one fail and I've seen several of them fired. They serve a purpose but I would have to agree with Daniel that with Makarovs on the market for $140, why would anyone pay $150 for a Hi Point?

Can't say I've spent a whole lot of time in Arkansas but last time we drove down to Texas we got gas at a small station that sold ammo and they had maybe 8 shotguns, a couple 22 rifles and maybe 5 handguns... It's God's country... Even if the Devil is from there, too.

Well sure, they're $130 now, when they're available. But AFAIK, they ain't makin' 'em anymore. When they supply of surplus ones runs out, they'll shoot up in value pretty quick. There isn't an infinite supply of them.

The base 9mm compact doesn't look that bad. The ugliness comes in with the incredibly hokey "compensator" and the "extended" magazine. Also if they straightened the foward part of the grip a little instead of the ergonomic(?) grooves they have...at any rate, it couldn't hurt.

It kinda reminds me of the nameless pistols you always get in computer games.

Actually, the only thing that bothers me is the warrantee! - The thing everyone else seems to LIKE!

If I understand correctly, if work needs to be done, you must pay for shipping both TO their facility AND also pay them shipping costs to get it back.

If they are fairly reliable (I don't know if they are or not) then they would appear to be a great value. If they need a few trips to the shop then I would think that the shipping costs would make them "expensive" rather quickly.

The other problem I have with this is that it might make it easier for them to NOT fix it completely hoping that you will get fed up with the shipping charges and just put up with it.

Having said that, I am still considering a Hi-Point carbine.

Youre not gonna find a .45acp,.40S&W or 9x19 Makarov.Thats why people buy Hi-Points! Youd think that every gun store in the USA had at least 100 used excellent S&W revolvers for a song considering all the times we hear "go buy a used model 10"

Hi Points are ugly I will give you that. 5 years ago my ex-stepdad had a 9mm blow up in his hand using factory ammo. It now graces his tv stand. If you want to trust your life to one go ahead and do it. I will stick with my 1911 and modle 10 any day.

Well, they are ugly, but they do shoot, and Mak doesn't offer a lifetime warranty. Some people can't afford to spend a whole lot of their discretionary income on a self defense pistol which they hope they never need. For those folks, the Hi-Point serves a purpose. I will say this, I do like their little carbines; and if I had to defend myself, even if the shooting is deemed righteous, the cops will have confiscated my P7, and some damn liberal judge will destroy it ( or take it home). I'd just as soon "loose" a Hi-Poiint! Maybe I better go buy one, though I will probably be too embarassed to show any of my friends.
