Finding a Western NY Gun Store

I'm in Penfield NY, an east side suburb of Rochester. My wife and I are applying for Pistol Permits and I've been looking online at handguns for sale, places like J&G Sales, but I'd like to find the best local store where I can see used and surplus handguns (and rifles) at good prices. I've visited a couple places, one in Victor (Pro Gun) and one in East Rochester. In ER, they wouldn't even let me touch the handguns since I haven't submitted my permit application yet. Wow, that's customer service. Guess where I won't be buying a handgun? Anyway, I saw they had a Sig P6 (German Police P225) and wanted $419 for it - YIKES! The same model is available at J&G Sales for $269 (plus shipping and transfer fee.) Is that what I'm in for here at gun stores? Or is there some big gun dealer with a big selection of used guns at good prices that I don't know about?

Once I'm done paying for the permit applications and fees (probably around $150 each for my wife and me) I won't have a lot of money left for guns and ammo.

When I lived in Utah, the pawn shops always had huge selections of guns, nothing like that around here, AFAIK.

I am not new to New York, I grew up here, just spend several years in Utah going to school, and later as a newlywed while my wife worked a job there for a year. I love the mountains, and the small town "downtown" areas there with their pawn shops and great Mexican restaurants.

Sadly, I never had any money for guns when I lived there. I remember seeing crates of brand new Chinese SKS rifles for, I think, $59 each. I knew what a deal that was, but there was no way I could even come up with even that small sum.

And GRRRR, I can't STAND to think of how arbitrary the pistol permit rules feel around here. I can hope to get an "unrestricted" permit, but it is by no means a sure thing. It's just "kiss the ring" and hope for the best...

Is Creekside Gunshop outside of Canandaigua still in business? I used to go there in the 70s and they were pretty good.

Don't fault the gun shop for not letting you touch. Under NY state law you can not posess a handgun that is not listed by serial number on your permit. They may let you handle a handgun if you have a permit, but even then they are not following the letter of the law. Same goes for shooting your buddies gun at the range, and of course renting handguns is out of the question.

Many highroaders suggest we all leave the state, but I suggest more of you guys move in, so that we can effect some positive change. Freedom isn't free.

There's some hope lately, especially with Seward and Magee in the state senate pushing pro-gun views. Join NYSRPA, vote, and tell your friends to vote. Upstate is starting to fight back against the City.

Buffalo Gun Center in Buffalo (of course) has a huge selection of handguns, new and used. Prices are okay, but mostly the going rate. You can find some good deals once in a while.

Pro Gun is actually a pretty good store. I've found a couple of good deals on used revolvers from them. I wouldn't hold them following the law against them.

And actually, in my county, Wayne, you have to list a handgun on the permit application, so while it may be technically illegal, it is usually acceptable to handle a handgun before you have submitted your application. I don't know why Pro Gun didn't let you, but they must have had their reasons.


Creekside Gun shop went out of business a few years ago, when the original owner retired and sold it to his employees. I'm not sure why they couldn't make it.

I loved Creekside, they closed some years ago and I haven't found anyone else as good - yet.

And at least in NY our permits are for life, with no renewal fees. Could be worse. Strangely, no classes required to get one - that's something I wouldn't oppose, a required safety class.

The shop that wouldn't let me touch the handguns was American Sportsman in East Rochester.

I had to take a class-I started a permit application and let it drop Years later I went back and did it all over Had to take the class again-This time no live fire Just dry fire .
to those who think we have any chance in NY state --Beleave me -Im 57 and have tried to change this state all my life Its only gotten worse every year -AWB Bans -Spent cartrage cases on file -Permits,
I lived in SC for 2 years -NC 2 years and MONTANA for 6 months All those places were gods country compaired to NY. If only we could cut the state off below syracuse and made a state of west NY Id cry tears of happiness.
My best bet at my age -LEAVE while I am still young enough to start over !
Dont forget the OTHER bad things about NY- ZONING-TAXES- Road Salt-Cell phones in cars -Helmit and seatbelt laws Car and truck INSPECTIONS![hook your car to the state emissions computer from the garage] One raping after another By the state -and when was the last time you got friendly service at any goverment Bureau -Ie Auto-Pistol-tax- and just try and run a small business in NY- Better to run away as fast as you can -Buffalo has lost 50thousand people In the last 10 years Theres a reason !

I wasn't thrilled with a recent experience at the same E. Rochester store. I have my permit, but seemed to me one of the two salesmen there at the time didn't know of what he spoke. Odd, as they come highly recommended.

On the other hand, the Custom Shop in Walworth is just east on 441 from Penfield. Very friendly, knowledgeable.

I have had good experiences with the Buffalo Gun Center. They have a large selection and are very decent to deal with. The same gun cost me a few bucks more than on line but the prices arent bad.

I used to live in Rochester as well... Pro-Gun in Victor was the only store I was familiar with.

On a side note, I miss Rochester. It easily has the best food of any city in the country. It also has it's own unique charm and culture. Unfortunately, the economy up there is in shambles. Otherwise, I'd think about moving back.

Try American Sportsman too. He's in East Rochester on Commercial St. If you deal with the owner, Fred, he knows his stuff. I've know the guys for almost 20 years and I send students there all the time and have never had a complaint.

Training.....ahhh training......You should have some. No one should ever be allowed to carry a firearm in public without training. Ever. Some people think they know what to do, or that they will figure it out when the time comes - not so. You need to learn what, when, and how to carry, how to act, and how to NOT use the handgun. Lots of people think the wrong ideas when carrying.

Go out, learn what you can, and then learn some more. Find someone locally that knows the laws, know the skills required to carry discreetly and reliably. Then get some training on how to shoot defensively. Just going to the range and shooting at a static target is not enough. Doing that will just teach you to defend yourself against static targets.

i live in Ny too around geneva,Ny if you look hard enough you will find more guns, just yesterday I was in libertygunshop in victor and I found an original 1870 remington rolling block in .45-70 perfect condition. NY has terrible laws but if you look very very hard you'll find gunshops in strange places.
