Finishing a semi finished butt stock

Greetings men. I had to buy a semifinished butt stock for a pump rifle and it is necessarilly a little large. What is the best way to whittle it down to the proper demensions? Thanks for any replies.

I use a belt sander, sanding blocks and tru oil for most of my stock work. I'm not sure what dimensions you want to whittle at though.
