Firearm Asset Management Database - ALPHA RELEASE 7/30/2014

Hi folks,

I have been working on this for quite a while. I call it, "Firearm Asset Management Database" and I initially developed it for my personal use. But decided to take it a step further, add some features, and make it available to the world. I know there are some already existing and they have quite a loyal following. I wanted something a bit more light weight and less cluttered.

I have made quite a bit of changes, hopefully for the better. It is officially in Alpha Release now I suppose so please feel free to download and try it out and letting me know what you think. Below I have some updated screenshots and a list of things that are still not 100% functional. Also, updated download link.

This is not cloud based and it purely local to your computer and your computer alone.

Change Log:
  • Converted from SQL Server to Access Database. Since the database is not hosted anywhere it made since to change it over.
  • Added Ability to add photos.
  • Updated with more options for items to keep track of.
  • Updated fields to track.
  • Added option to export to an excel spread sheet to print off and store in safe. (Half working..I think..)
As well as a slew of other things, check it out.

Known issues that I am working on fixing:
  • No encryption yet. Aim to have that available before I release a final version.
  • The menu bar across the top is not fully coded.
  • Windows only right now.
  • When you upload an entry you have to hit refresh before it will show up. Figuring out how to call the update method when the load form closes.
  • The export feature is almost working. It will generate an excel file but there will not be any data in it if you have excel 2013. Not sure if it works with earlier versions. If it does please let me know.
  • If you find anything else that you think is in issue, please let me know.

Looking a this on my iPad so I don't think I can download it but it looks really sweet based on the screenshots!

Thanks! It is Windows only right now. I plan on releasing an Apple compatible version in the future....just as soon as I learn what ever language they use

I'm going to download it on my pc later and check it out! I'm not a apple guy but any apple computer should be able to dual boot, so windows only will probably be fine for now.

My thought exactly. Please let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions for improvement.

Looks cool from screenshot but have a mac so I can't try it. Would definitely be interested however in the future if you release a mac version.

Yeah mine did that to so I remove all the SQL Elements and replaced with Microsoft Access database thinking maybe it didnt like all of the sql stuff. Thanks for letting me know its still an issue.

I think that is happening because I do not have the spare cash to spend $100+ per year on a code signing cert from something like verisign or Microsoft Authenticode.

I was able to download the Zip folder just fine and extract the contents. However, when I try to run Setup.exe I get the Error that The publisher ... Which brings us to:

Which means in laymen terms you aren't paying the devil his due. :)

Setup has detected that the publisher of file 'C:\Users\Ron\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD2BE0.tmp\SqlLocalDB2012\x64\sqlcmdlnutils.msi' cannot be verified.

See the setup log file located at 'C:\Users\Ron\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD2BE0.tmp\install.log' for more information.

Additionally there is still reference to SQL Server 2014 Express LocalDB. :(

However, using the FAM Window Installer I was able to look at the Access data base and tables. Just can't run the executable file to install. Running Windows Vista on this system and downloaded using FireFox.

Any one else have the above issue?

I might have accidentally left in A SQL dependancy.

downloaded and installed without a hitch. PC i7 core running win xp pro 64 bit. IE11. No errors whatsoever.

I'll try to play around with it later. At first glance, looks very useful and easy to use.

Edit:
OK, first constructive criticism.
~Delete the photo requirement. I was going to add some firearms, and add photos and serial numbers, other fields later, but the "photo is required" pop up will not let me proceed.

~Add ability to edit firearms once they are in the database. maybe add a "sold" button that if a firearm is sold. it goes to a "sold" tab, or puts a "Sold" banner across the picture.

OK, one more:
Under range report, add a dropdown box the specific firearm used if its in the database and link to it, and maybe a button that takes you to the range report for that firearm, from the firearm page. Hope that makes sense.

This is all first glance after using it for 5 minutes, so I apologize if this functionality is already in there somewhere.

OK, general question, I am unfamiliar with access. Is the file embedded in the software, or is it a separate file like an xcel or word doc? The reason I ask is I would like the ability to save the file to dropbox or USB stick, or another computer, without saving the program. Just a thought

Overall, looks awesome, ive been a slacker maintaining a database (OK actually never have). This software makes me actually want to do it.

Got your PM and replied. Also sent along an email with some screen shots. Thanks for the PM and interest. I see TheFish had no problems with the install. I may give it a try on my wife's computer running Windows 7 64 bit.

Awesome feed back!

If you go to C:\Program Files(x86)\FAM Studio\Firearm Asset Management Database you will find a file named FAMDatabase.accdb

That is the database file.

I will add your recommendations to my list and see about adding some if not all of them to subsequent versions. Any updates I make I will update the download link and the OP here.

I'll download this as soon as I get home tonight. Running Windows 7 on an HP desktop.

Looks really nice at first glance. You've done some good work here.

Thanks, I put a lot of time into it. A lot more to go.

Small note, I noticed the desktop icon shortcut seems to have the word management misspelled. Granted, nothing much but could use a fix.

Ha, good catch. I am the worlds worst at fat fingering a keyboard.

OK, played around with it a little more. A few more observations.
Hopefully you understand I'm not nitpicking your software, I actually really like it a lot.

1. Pics. ability to add multiple pics would be great, maybe 3 views.
2. Add "Rifle", "pistol" into the fields, and then have a tab to sort. Or just maybe a tab for each. I can see guys with large collections wanting to be able to sort by rifle or pistol.
3. "duplicate" feature. Like when adding mags under accessories, I have a bunch of 20 and 30 round pmags, To be able to put in a 20 round, then duplicate it and change the 20 to 30, or color, or whatever, would be cool.

Other than that, looks GREAT!

OK, one more thing,
Resize the left side so the picture is a little smaller, so there is no scroll bar (or just make the font slightly smaller), and maybe add the ability to double clock the picture and have it go full size. High photo detail could be helpful to show identifying marks in the event of theft ID or insurance claim.

My test machine and the machine I developed it on is Windows 7 with Office 2013 and I did not get that issue. I will look into it though. Although, they are both 64 bit so that might have something to do with it. Could you mind emailing me a screenshot of the error you received?

[email protected]

Good point on the beta vs. alpha and you are right.
