Firearm Registration

registering cars is required so that we have a way to pay for roads etc.
And bicycles should be registered so that they can participate in the up keep of our roads also.

Largely it's about safety. What if everyone decided to start driving homemade cars? I don't want to be going down the road to find someone coming at me with a car that has beer kegs for wheels.
In other words, for the government to decide which cars are safe and which ones aren't. And now we're right back where we started. So then wouldn't you argue that guns should be registered? At least ones carried in public spaces to insure their safety?

You can't buy a toaster that hasn't passed certain safety requirements, yet they don't have to be registered. So how does registering a car insure its safety? It doesn't. There are millions of unsafe cars on the road (and even more drivers) in spite of car registration.

I'm going to stand on my previous statements and go no further since this branch has really gotten off the original topic.

Moderator comment:

Should cars be registered? Or toasters? Let it go -- that's not the focus of THR.

The question was about the evils of GUN registration.

If we can't stick to that, we'll say g'night to this one.

The point of comparison is to show that the very nature of any kind of government registry is to keep track of people, and often limit their freedoms. You're obviously OK with it in regards to cars, but much of the general public is fine with it for firearms as well.

Registering my arms is an infringement. Having to get a special permit to keep and bear a handgun is an infringement. Telling me what type of firearms I can or can't keep and bear is, yup, you guessed it, an infringement.

By it's very nature, it keeps some people from keeping and bearing arms by making a citizen subject to governmental jurisdiction.

Having to register also implies that myself and/or my arms are subject to a denial of registration.

I learned at a very early age that just prior to, and during WW2, the Nazi's used gun registration records to determine who the armed populace were.
If for no other reason, there is that.

"If this is so, how can laws like the AWB, and the silly NY/Kawlifawnea laws be in place?"

well fact of the matter is, legally they can't. But they get away with it because Californians just sat back and took it, or got scared and misinformed about reality into letting it happen. If California collectively said "No more" and refused to acknowledge those laws and let there elected officials know why, the laws would go away. the same goes for the rest of the nations unconstitutional laws regarding guns.

The U.S. Government confiscated gold from citizens it knew owned the precious metal in 1933 via executive order. Do you really want that same government to have a detailed list of all your firearms complete with serial numbers?

in thinking about this michigan requires all hand guns to be registered through purchase permits. i didnt really think about it when i bought the guns because i would have to go out of state otherwise and technically i would have to register them any way. i really wish this registration were repealed, it would make buying easier and i would feel a lot better, it really dosnt do anyone any good.
