With only 4 days left before my existing firearms license expires, my renewal finally came through last night after several LONG weeks of waiting. Oh and the best part, ITS RESTRICTION FREE!!!! :D No more Target and Practice only restriction. The officer hands me the new card and in nice big letters it says "For All Lawful Purposes".

Since my last permit was for target and practice only, I've come to realize that I have no handguns suitable for CCW. Guess I'm going to have to change that pretty quick. I was thinking of getting a j-frame S&W like a 642 or some equivalent. So what do you guys think. Hammer or no Hammer for CCW?

Hummmmmm, now that I can I'll have to seriously start to think on the How to CCW, where on my body to CCW, When to CCW and What kind of pistol to carry while in CCW mode.

Decisions, Decisions.

Its unfortunate that you have to have a permit for target and practice only.

On the upside, congrats on the CCW permit. Now go out shopping for a quality rig and enjoy.

wow, sometimes i forget how oppressive some parts of our country are.

anyway, i vote shrouded hammer if you're set on a revolver, but my opinion is that either the glock model 23 or the kimber ultra carry ten II are both ideal carry pieces. i know alot of people feel that five is enough, but 10 or 13 sure doesn't hurt (you anyway)

oh, and you'll probably have to experiment alot to find a good carry method - what works for some doesn't for others but might i suggest quality leather, galco for instance, in a 4 o'clock iwb to start.

A hammerless revolver is nice for pocket carry. Personally, I prefer an IWB holster or an OWB pancake style. Pockets are really not good for quick access to the gun.

You might also want to look into an automatic -- if you can, borrow and try several guns -- even if you can only wear them for a few minutes at the range. You'll be surprised at how "carryable" automatics are.

Congrats. 642's a great gun for ccw, btw.

Whatever you do, don't try to CCW the S&W .500! :neener:

Congrats on navigating the horrible MA laws.

***s won't even issue mine

It's supposed to take 4-6 weeks. It has been eight. They don't answer the phone or respond to letters and I am too afraid that stopping by might elicit a hostile reaction. I have contacted my congressman who is looking into it, but it doesn't look good. Funny how some people think the 2nd isn't dead.

Congratulations, you obviously don't live in Brookline.

I hear the Brookline police will show up unnanounced for a warrantless search of your home should you care to apply for a class A LTC in their area.

Ironically, I live in a really pro-gun district of NJ as well. Let's hear it for those common sense pockets in the lefty states.

I've heard some of the same horror stories of renewals in towns right around Boston. To be honest, renewing my permit was one of the deciding factors to buying a house in a small rural central Mass community. With the ease of the getting this done, I'm very happy with my choice.

Kel - What part of the state do you live in? I only had to wait 5 weeks for my renewal. 8 weeks seems like they are messing with you. If they keep you in the dark you may want to get a lawyer. If your in the the central Mass area there's a lawyer that belongs to my shooting club who specializes in these types of issues. I can get you his name if you'd like.

I live in Medford right now. I don't have the time or money to fight this as I just graduated, my job hasn't turned full time yet, and I am paying for an engagement ring/wedding right now. They have won this round, but the minute my fiance graduates I am moving back to America.

Even if I did try to fight it, what could I do? In this state the police only have a legal obligation to accept the application. They have no obligation to process it or issue a license. Funny how they also have no obligation to come when called either...

My sister used to live in Brookline. Blecch!
I always get a perverse pleasure out of CCWing in the Boston area. It comes both from knowing that I am responsible for my own safety, and that somewhere an Anti is feeling a disturbance in the Force.

if you can't afford a lawyer, pretend you are one. call them and tell them you (fake name) "represent" yourself (real name). they don't know your voice and people often respond better to lawyers. maybe they've just "lost" the application and a "lawyer" will get them moving.
