Wondering if anyone knows what the applicable laws are regarding possesion of firearms (CC Pistol) onboard the ferry between Milwaukee and Muskegon. I am traveling through there in a couple weeks and will have my pistol with me. I know in Wisconsin it is in the trunk and unloaded blah, blah, blah. The question is does it matter if it is the trunk unladed and locked up on the ferry. I would hope not but the only thing I could find regarding it on the website and any searching is murky at best

thanks for the help

If the ferry is a documented vessel (as most commercial vessels are that transport passengers for hire) then you might want to reconsider the previous advice.

TITLE 18 - CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART I - CRIMES
CHAPTER 111 - SHIPPING

-HEAD-
Sec. 2277. Explosives or dangerous weapons aboard vessels

-STATUTE-

pursuant to the provisions of Act June 6, 1941, ch. 174, 55 Stat.
242, as amended, without previously obtaining the permission of the
owner or the master of such vessel; or

explosive on board of any vessel in the possession and under the
control of the United States or which has been seized and forfeited
by the United States or upon which a guard has been placed by the
United States pursuant to the provisions of section 191 of Title

the port in which such vessel is located, shall be fined under this
title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
(b) This section shall not apply to the personnel of the Armed

IANAL but are those weasel words that might allow concealed carry with a permit from the state (s) involved?

I'm surprisd nobody has challenged this to get some clarification. There are a lot of ferries in this country and it's just hard to imagine this sort of naval regs apply to all of them.

Is there anything in regards to inland waterways?

Couldn't you just as easily argue that all boats registered with the "State" are thereby documented under the laws of the United States?

Different boat, but on the USS Badger, between Ludington and Kenosha, I kept the BHP in my luggage in the pop-up camper trailer.
No problem.

The guy who checked the car in asked if I had any firearms, I said yes. He had a Labrador Retriever with him that sat right next to trailer where the pistol in the bag was stashed. He shared with me "The dog sits when he smells guns or explosives".

I'd just make an anonymous phone call and ask for their procedure on transporting legally owned and carried firearms.

thanks for the info so far. I am still trying to get a straight answer out of them. Obviously being licensed in wisconsin is out of picture since I am not LEO. I will keep searching. If they don't search my car or anything obviously it is fine don't ask don't tell. However the consequences might be big.

keep them coming if you got anything

thanks again

Hello - This thread bounced around a bit in Google, came out as a news alert and made it's way to the Lake Express office. I'm writing here to provide a quick reply and clarification from Lake Express regarding our firearms policy. Without exception, you must declare firearms prior to boarding the vessel. Additional information follows, including our contact number for any questions regarding specific terms and conditions of carriage. I hope this helps - AS.

The M/V LAKE EXPRESS is a federally documented passenger vessel (documented by the U. S. Coast Guard) and is subject federal law, including 18 USC 2277 which has been appropriately sited in this thread. Additionally, we are a privately owned company and may therefore prescribe the “Terms and Conditions of Carriage” that we feel are appropriate to our operation.

We make every effort to accommodate our passengers and have several options for our customers who wish to transport fire arms and ammunitions. We have several additional options for uniformed and plain clothes law enforcement officers.

Information regarding carriage of fire arms and ammunition can be obtained by contacting our Customer Service Call Center at 866-914-1010.

Our website, www.lake-express.com includes fare information, a schedule of daily roundtrips between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI and information on special seasonal promotions.

Lake Express is currently in its 7th season of operation on Lake Michigan, is a green-certified business and enjoys the distinction of being the first high speed auto and passenger ferry to enter service in the United States. The Lake Michigan crossing takes just 2-1/2 hours vs. 5 hours or more on a comparable trip around the southern end of Lake Michigan through Chicago.
