It is high time that americans faced the fact that all races of people are not the same. Whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, and any other people, all look different, talk different, think different, act different, and are in many ways nothing like one another. Americans have long tryed to ignore the differences in people, and force them to get along. It didn't work in the past, it doesn't work now, and it won't work in the future. It is time for every race to embrace their own differences and live in harmony with themeselves and not worry about what the other race is doing. If people want to better themeselves, then they need to get off their butt and do it the old fashioned way, instead of on the backs of other people.

union probably would make it impossible to fire her or anyone else"

Wrong. The fact is that the person was fired.

I guarantee you- they would if they could.

that made city leaders promise to promote a citywide climate of tolerance

the union respects the city's policy of zero tolerance

a revamped hiring process aimed at increasing diversity

One cannot have "diversity" and "zero tolerance" and a "climate of tolerance" co-existing, it just ain't possible! :scrutiny:

A committee is planning a memorial to honor King, the slain civil rights leader.
A federal holiday isn't enough? Must there be a statue on every streetcorner? :barf: And how EXACTLY does this "memorial" rectify anything?

The Fire Department has offered jobs to African-Americans under a revamped hiring process
Quotas? Preference points? Sign-on bonuses for being African-American?

"...Horton said that she didn't believe the word she used was a racial term..."

How did somebody so stupid make Lt. in the first place?

John

Words are words. If you say something that makes someone mad or uncomfortable you will have to deal with their response physically or verbally.

If you say it on the job you had better make sure everyone agrees with you.

We need education, not laws about hate speech or firing everyone who uses a word that is deemed offensive.

The only wise thing my grandfather ever told me was that you don't have to be black to be a ****** and that skin color has nothing to do with class
or social worth.

Well, being stupid has never been a barrier to being promoted in any organization. Reverse discrimination has only made that problem worse.

A rose by any other name.

The trouble people have with these types of words is that, for some, it strikes too close to home.

Is it a derogatory descriptive word? Yes. Does that make it incorrect to use it? Not when it is used in the proper circumstances. Too many people use it to refer to a whole class of people rather than the ones whom actually fall within its descriptive guidelines.

What descriptive guidelines? These are mine for such "race based" words and they include "whitetrash", etc.

These people are those who feel that the world owes them something because of the color of their skin. They never have amounted to anything and never will amount to anything. And, perhaps most importantly, they are those who would walk over a person of their own race just as fast, if not faster, than they would another if that person stood between them and something they desired. They are the dregs of society and come in all colors. We just have shortcut words to refer to the various racial types.

As has been pointed out in the other posts, it is "OK" for those within a racial group to use words refering to those within that group. I submit that words are just that, words. And, like any other tool, are not something to be feared when used correctly.
