I’ve been a Firefly fan for quite awhile now. Devoted enough, in fact, to have built Serenity several times from paper & cardboard. Got another, bigger version, 21" finished length, under construction as I write. But this is about the guns used in the show. I’ve wanted something similar since the first episode, and at long last I’m gonna have one.

Picked up this Uberti 1862 Rebel Confederate in .36 caliber last year. Only shot her once because loading conicals with the cylinder in the gun is sloooooow going. Gotta either get me a round ball mold or a loading stand. Anywho, I figgered this’d be a good piece to make my Firefly blaster out of. Time to start making some mods.

I’ve never been a fan of sharp edges on plow handle grips. First thing to get dinged up is that bottom edge whenever it’s in the holster. Also don’t like that slight kick out at the bottom of the front grip strap. Took her apart to make sure there was enough meat in the grip frame then spent a couple hours with files and sandpaper to radius the corners. Fits my hand much better now.

The one piece wood grip was some kinda pinkish brown color and that just had to go. Since I’d sanded everything while adjusting the grip shape I thought to try staining the wood to look like walnut. Utter failure.

Whatever the wood is it don’t like MinWax stain. In desperation I threw on some USMC black leather dye. That got it. A little light oil and a rag took the excess off so now the wood looks more like horn. That I can live with.

The sights on the gun sucked, being a notch in the hammer and a teeny post up front. I wanted something a bit easier to pick up even though she’s basically a point & shoot gun. A rummage through the parts bin turned up several things that’d kinda work, but didn’t really have the look I was after.

Then I came across the shotgun rib. Hmmmmm. A little file and fit and it looks right at home on the barrel. The rear sight I fabbed is a bit blocky, might change it later. Won’t know for sure until the add-ons are in place and see if it all looks “right” together. Front sight is just a chunk of 1/8" brass soldered straight on to the rib. Prolly a bit tall, but it’s easier to file ‘em down once they’re in place.

And finally, a little patina to the brass. Casey’s Super Blue liquid applied multiple times until the brass was a dark brown, almost black. Then WD-40 liberally applied and repeated scrubbing with a flannel rag to brighten her back up. Just enough patina to dull it out some and make it look used and old. That bright polish it came with was near blinding in bright sun.

Still playing around with various brass bits for the add-ons. Might be awhile before I get anywhere on that. Stay tooned.........

Cool ,are you also gonna build Jane's favorite rifle that he was willing to trade for the captains woman?

I am still amused at how Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres) single-handedly revived interest in the "mare's leg" or 1892 trapper pistol (a weapon type apparently originated by 1950s "Wanted Dead or Alive").

The guns on the various Firefly planets and moons represented technology that could easily be replicated using means available in frontier areas equivalent to the Afghan/Pakistan border. (Of course in the Alliance dominated areas the rich and establishment had lasers and sonic weapons.)

It's quite a challenge. The props guys on Firefly didn't have to worry about practical function. Trying to create some kind of spacey steampunk style add-on that remains functional without being too silly is not easy. I like the rib, since it truly does improve the handgun's functionality.

You might try incorporating some very fancy style target grips--the ones that swoop way back and around.

Here'a previous attempt. Non-firing, made completely from junk.

I've seen a exact replica on thinkgeek, I believe it was. Non-working of course but very cool. There's some other good stuff from the show on there too including Jayne's hat! And i would mind one of those "Bring back firefly" shirts either.

Ya know..., that's not bad at all!

You might want to take a look at the Dixie Gunworks online catalog and think about modifying an 1858 Remington, with a cylinder kit, and then you can use the loading lever, which would then be unneeded to mount a light on one side, and if you replaced it with something solid, you could add a laser sight as well, not to mention some sort of optic sight or aimpoint on the top of the reciever.

There is also a "Remington Carbine", or you might be able to maintain the revolver as a cap-n-ball, and add a detachable shoulder stock.

After much cogitation I finally figgered out a simple, yet elegant solution which shouldn't take too long to fabricate. Now I just gotta find/make the time to get it done. I oughtta have something to show in a week or so.

My wife and i love that show. So much that we named our second daughter Vera Jane.

Cool project. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Well it's half way there. But you have to somehow make the old and new look like they belong together and have always belonged together. It's not easy, and when you add in the attempt to have a working firearm it gets even more difficult.

Ha! Those steam punk guns are quite fun to peruse actually. Crazy stuff!

Thanks RaceM, your thread here has made me go back and watch the entire series again over this last week. I have, again, enjoyed it immensely. It still burns me that the show was never renewed. A pity that something so so good got such little support at the time.

I'm going to finish the week off by watching Serenity today!

P.S. Whew, Morena Baccarin is just ridiculously gorgeous. Watching the show is just one more excuse to ogle her, lol!

:::sigh:::

Who’d a thunk this’d be so difficult? Lots of time at the bench looking at pieces, soldering them together, spinning ‘em in the lathe, test fitting, taking apart, cutting off, and on and on and on...

Wish now I hadn’t given away most of my brass scrap. Would’ve given me more options on pieces.

Anyways, here’s a progress pic. Main brass bits together, more or less, and relative positions established. Don’t look like much but there’s a lot of work involved in those three pieces.

Onwards to the mounting unit......
