tl;dr
I have a colt slide and all the parts needed to make a full 1911 except for a few miscellaneous and the receiver. Can I buy a receiver online, say from Brownells and put together a functional 1911. Will I need to fit some parts to the newer frame? I have found several 1911 build posts but none with my situation. I want a plain Mil-Spec 1911.

I have a Colt Slide, barrel and all the miscellaneous parts I would need to make a 1911, except the receiver, barrel bushing, recoil spring and a couple pins. All the parts I have are brand new, and in unused condition bought sometime in the 50--60's by my great grandfather who passed on.
(My grandfather who inherited them from his dad didn't want them so I asked if I could use them to build a functional 1911 he thought it was a good idea)

Now as far as me and my grandfather can tell they are all in excellent condition, not a spot of finish wear or rust. All were kept oiled and the barrel/slide was still wrapped in paper/cosmoline.

Now my main concern is if I buy a receiver and the parts I need, will I need any machine tools to fit the gun together. I understand I will probably have to fit the slide to the frame which which my grandfather advised me too. My main worry is that I will end up biting off more than I can chew and end up with a pile of parts that will lie in a drawer and be out a few hundred.

New here, if I'm in the wrong place please let me know and I'll correct things.

There are numerous books on how to for the 1911 guns. Perhaps a trip to ebay or amazon for some used ones would be cheap and helpfull. I would start with a good read to familiarize yourself with what to expect.

Some fitting is likely but its not as hard as you might think to build a shooter from parts. The grip frame is the serial numbered part and completely machined ones are available. Proper paperwork required. I'd go for it and have fun, take your time. At the end you will have a piece of family history you can shoot.
