have recently decided to pull the trigger and buy an ar15 due to the possibility of parts shortage etc. I didn't have a large budget due to just having a baby ( the wife isn't very supportive of my hobby right now lol) but I did want to get the best"value" possible while keeping the budget for the gun around $500. This gun will not be for home defense or shtf ( i have that covered). I will mainly just use it for plinking at the range and to learn the platform to figure out what I like/don't like. That way I can spend more next time on something I know i want.

To be perfectly clear I did not build the gun. I snapped together a complete upper and lower. All the ar15 guns in the $500 dollar range are lacking some of the features I was looking for so I went this route. I believe i could have built the lower, but after researching I found out I could buy a complete for around the same price. The Anderson am15, Delton sport, Dpms Oracle etc have commercial buffers and 4140 barrel steel with no coating such as melonite and 1/9 twist rate. They also are not available in midlength, which I read a lot of owners prefer due to smoother gas system.

I now have a complete ar15 for $485 from PSA with most of the features I was looking for. I found a local ffl that ordered all the parts. Prices listed are OTD

Compete Blem Classic lower $180(has qd sling sockets no blem found)
16inch midlength freedom upper with CMV 4150 barrel melonited 1/7 twist $195
HPT/MPI BCG $90
Charging handle $20
Ffl threw in a free D&H mag
Total $485

The upper and lower lock up nice and tight. Hope to get it out this weekend to the range. I will post a range report when I do. I did also buy a Magpul rear MBUS for $45 and found a lnib Vortex strikefire for $130.

Just posting this because I have done a lot of research and feel this option is better than buying one of the "ultra budget" complete ar15s and gives you a much better value as far as components go.

Sounds like a solid "economy" ar build. I've done lots of these, and you could have done a lot worse for the money. Keep it lubed up and it should serve you well. PSA has some amazing daily and weekend specials...

A good basic build.

If your lucky, you'll change change a few things as time passes and be happy with it. But if you're like many of us, ARs seem to multiply in the night.

The nice thing about AR's is their modularity. Swap out the pistol grip and stock, and drop in an aftermarket trigger. Lower is GTG. Want a varmint upper with a 22" barrel? How about something in .300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel? They will all fit on your lower. Of course, those extra uppers get lonely in the cabinet... Already have a picatinny rail on top? Iron sights, red dots, and scopes can be swapped or complement each other. Get a railed or keymod handguard, with all that extra real estate, and watch your light carbine start needing a padded sling to accompany you to the range. Yep, you have just started down the rabbit hole, my friend. (But that's okay, we're friendly here at the bottom :D )

Yea the reason I went basic was to get a feel for what I will like. I can always make mod s to this one ore just get another! Took it out for the first time today. Ran great for the first 100 rounds. Got the iron sight s gtg. Going to mount the vortex strikefire 2 this week. I can see how this platform is so addicting! Already have a bunch of ideas
