First bobcat and a fox!

Went out for some predator calling today...

First stand, about 6 minutes in this cat came into Lucky Bird. I thought it was a fox at first, but when it cleared the brush I could see it was a kitty. Came in downwind and the first shot was at like 20 yards. First shot put it down, but it got back up and started running around. Third shot put it down for good. Pretty little female, can't wait to get the pelt back! What a rush, fun stuff!


We had dry stands until number 5. About 11 minutes nothing had come in. Casey says he had seen a bunch of Blue Jays flying in the area on this stand so thats what he switched to, and this fox came it. The 12 guage took care of this big ole male too! It was a good day to sat the least, as this is my first bobcat, and my goal was to kill one before the end of the year. Casey's goal was to kill a fox, bobcat, and coyote this year all with a shotgun. We both reached our goals.

#4 buck. 2 3/4" 27 pellet load. First shot was at like 20 yards, missed second shot, third shot was at like 30-40 yards. I already forgot, I think I counted around 12 pellet holes in the pelt.

Yeah I gutted it to butcher it, I took the hind quarters. In the crock pot now. Then I skinned her and the pelt is in the freezer. You don't have to case them. I'm just having the pelt done, not a full body mount. Can't wait to get it done. That fox is a really pretty one too, it should also turn out very nice.

I wish I was sir! Actually it was pretty good. I'd compare it most to rabbit. In the crock pot with pepperoccini brine, olive oil, and lime juice, topped with paprika, garlic salt, pepper, and a little anise seed.

proof that a 100 gr bullet out of a 7mm rem mag is a bit much for varmint hunting if you want to keep anything.
the fox was running away from me at about 150yrds and hit him in the spine.

this was a good lookin dog but she stopped, kinda ruined the hide

Cat...the other white meat. I worked with a guy that had worked the steel mills up in Gary, IN...at break a local vendor sold chilli dogs...then one day he was gone...they found out he was using stray cat meat in the chilli mix....I asked if he got sick when he found out....nope..."That was the best chilli dogs ever!!"

Well this is my first cat so I don't really know what is average for the area, but I think it was a young one, on the smallish side.

Not down talking your first cat by anymeans wankerjake! Congrats on your success! The reason I asked about it's size is that it is much smaller that what I'm used to seeing around here. It may be regional or just a young cat(my guess since it came to a call)as older cats come in very slowly to calls. Anyway I'm happy for you!

No I didn't take offense, I just don't really know much about bobcats. I thought it was small and the guy I was with thought it was small too, it's teeth were still good and sharp so my guess is that it's just young. Casey got one a few weeks ago that he said was a lot bigger. I guess that one was a pretty old one, had cracked teeth and such. The only other one I've seen was way bigger, but that was in a very different part of AZ and a long time ago. It was running in to the call when I first saw it, and was just starting to creep when I shot her, maybe twenty yards from the call.

On a side note in the pics it looks about the same size as the fox, but it was quite a bit heavier (I carried them both back to the truck).

I have a Mauser M98 sporter that I built in .257 Roberts with varmints in mind that I sure would like to see how it performs on cats. Also would like to bloody the Steven's Model 200 in .223 remington that I have. I have to use mouth calls here as electronic calls are not allowed.

When I was a kid growing up in IL I use to trap raccoon, beaver, fox, etc... I use to the take the raccoons and skin them and then sell them to people on the "south side of the tracks". After the first time the old man that was buying them from me asked me to leave the feet on so he could make sure he wasn't buying domestic cat! For some reason it was ok for him to be eating raccoon, but it was not ok for him to eat cat... they look very similar!

Yeah, I don't know if I'll ever buy one. It's nice because you can sit perfectly still and just watch, but I feel a little better when I use hand calls to get one in. But they are really nice with a LOT of sounds.

Pretty interesting. I dont know if i would hunt cats/wolves(too much respect for them but coyotes are a different story) but I can understand the thrill of it and population control. its good to hear that you are eating the meat as well. I had Wolf jerky about 3 weeks ago from a male that my buddies uncle shot. Some people would frown on it but it wasnt bat at all.
