Hey. Pretty new to the boards. A friend pointed me this way.
I've got a soon to be 13 year old girl whom I previously thought was hard-core anti-weapon....odd seeing as how both her dad and I and her step-dad are avid hunters and gun lovers......anyway, after recently pulling her out public school to home school her, we've had some really great visits.
It's come out that she isn't against hunting, she's against trophy hunting and thinks that hunting with guns is "not fair" to the animal. Okay, I can buy that.
She wants to learn to use a bow to hunt. My husband and I are considering buying her a bow for her 13th birthday.
Any recommendations? I've never shot a bow myself, although I would love to.
I need an inexpensive bow for a beginner-she has a tendancy to grow bored after awhile, so I don't want to be out a LOT. But something that she can grow with if this takes her fancy. Thanks now!

Welcome!
Glad to hear you might have a future archer.
Advice=> Take her to a reputable archery dealer where they can get her set up with the right equipment. they will probably have some bows and options she can try for herself. They might have some used equipment also. Kids tend to grow out of stuff and trade out of good used stuff.
Fortunes are wasted by people with good intentions, buying equipment that doesn't fit the archer, or doesn't fit thier needs.

I don't know where you are located, so you may want to Google archery clubs in Wyoming. They would be a good resource along with local pro shops. I am just getting into archery myself and have found the local shop and club to be very helpful resources. There also are a lot of general archery resources on the Web, such as www.archerytalk.com.

Fit is even more important in archery than in rifle hunting. It is important to get set up by someone who knows what they are doing. (BTW, the first thing to figure out is eye dominance if you don't already know it.)

Once I got involved, my son thought it would be enjoyable to do, and a friend gave him a great deal on a bow that fit him well. I think he's going to be hooked. Your daughter may enjoy it more if you or your husband tried it as well.

Finally, be aware that WG&F regs require 40 lbs draw weight for everything but elk and moose and 50 for elk for elk and moose.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for the input. I am going to find out if our 4-H group here in town has an archery group. I know that 4-H offers archery in some areas, but not all have adults that can help.
I DO want to get into archery. I too, would prefer bow hunting over rifle(although I DO love my 8mm mauser for deer hunting) so maybe she and I can learn together. She's pretty determined to use a recurve, while I would prefer a compund, but we could still practice together! We'll go to the nearest sporting good sstore to check out different bows as soon as we get back to our house in the country......post fire hassles are no fun to deal with.
Thanks again for the help!
Heather
