Hello i am looking into three possible guns for my first CC gun. I work for Academy and we get a nice little discount on firearms but i am still keeping to a budget of less than $400 and 9mm. My three choices so far is the Ruger SR9c, S&W SD9, and the CZ P-07 Duty. I know all three guns are great guns but i would like to hear others opinions on these choices for CC. Also if there are any other options that you can add to the list please feel free. My main purpose for the gun would be CC and home defense but i would like to take the gun out to the range and have fun with the gun too.

Of the picks you mentioned #1 would be ...CZ. Lots of people love the CZ 9s, I myself prefer my FNP-9 because its the only auto 9 I shoot well. (Still looking for the elusive BHP). SR9s are not bad, I have shot a friends, didnt group well enough for me. Owned a S&W 9 when they came out shot area of bandito on horseback, I hear the M&P is much improved.

Doesn't Academy also carry the SIG 2022 for $399? That's another I would add to your list, along with the venerable Glock 19 or 26. Among the ones you listed, my vote goes to the CZ, although my experience has been only with the P01, which is fairly similar.

perfect answer

We do carry the 2022, i should look into it more but when i first held it, it did not have a good first impression. Might have to go on a day off and give it a better inspection. Also i had a Glock 23 and 19 in my first list but even academy still has them for around $530 and with my discount it is still over $450. Not to rule it out as a future purchase but for right now this is my budget. :(

I don't think you'll regret the CZ P07. Plus you can get a Kadet Kit later on and plink all day long with cheap .22 if you're on a tight budget. Glock also has .22 conversion slides from Advantage Arms but they're a little harder to find.

Thanks everyone, I will be going into work today to get a feel for the 2022 but now I feel I will be leaning more toward the CZ than anything else. On a side note I do get the M&P 9 for $405 w/o tax so would that be a better option for me? I am a big guy so I am wondering if carrying a full size like that would be a little too much.

For a carry gun I'd go with the SR9c. The CZ is a fine gun, and you'll be happy with it I'm sure but it is bigger than the SR9c in pretty much every dimension, which would make the Ruger easier to carry. My SR9c is a sweet shooter and carries easy.

Either way, whatever you decide, lets get a range report when you get it in!

Dont forget about kahr. I have a cw9 for ccw. Got it from bud's for 360. 500 plus rounds and 0 malfunctions. Small, thin, and lightweight and 8 rounds of deadly 9mm.

Wish i could find a Kahr or kel-tec for that price down here but the cheapest PF9 i found was close to retail and i love the gun but i just dont see it as anything other than a CC gun for me. That is a reason why i did not add the Ruger LC9 to my list even though academy sells it. They are just to small in my hand and i do not feel comfortable shooting them long periods of time like at a range.

I understand being loyal to your employer and all, but you may want to shop around for a better price. Your "discount" doesn't mean much if it still leaves you over what you can find the gun for elsewhere. For example, I just bought a Glock 17 last week for $400. Granted it was from an individual, but the gun itself was brand new.

Also, I hear that the CZs are good guns, but I don't really like the 2022. I much prefer the older P22x series guns.

or maybe save up for a couple of weeks more and get want you really want. its worth it in the long run

a glock 19 is an excellent ccw gun and worth every penny

To be honest it is not so much as i am loyal to Academy as it is that here in south Texas unless you buy used from a private seller you are pretty much left with cut throat gun dealers. If i really want to get any good deals i would have to travel out and go north to San Antonio or Houston which is a nice 5-7 hour drive for me to get a gun, or i could always pay up the extra $60 for a local FFL transfer (Academy will not do transfers).

On another note i got a feel for some of my choices at another LGS and so far my findings are like this:
SR9c = nice size and weight but awkward feel with CC mag in but full size mag was great
S&W SD9 = great feel, nice weight, lots of options but trigger was not all that great
Sig 2022 = just did not feel right in my hand at all and weight was the highest of all
S&W M&P 9 = nice gun but do not see myself carrying day in and day out
Sig 226 = Best feel and balanced weight, but dear god the price tag scared me
Kel-Tec PF9 = still love this gun but i still believe its main purpose is pocket pistol/carry gun
Kahr PM9 = same as PF9
FNH Five Seven = this was one of my favorites, just had to hold it, but i can already hear BATFE busting down my door since i live so close to the border
CZ75 P-07 = This gun felt like it was part of my arm, the grip was perfect and the weight was just right, even with all the hard edges it still felt really nice and was just so at home in my hand.

Looks like the CZ is winning. It does have a very nice ergonomic grip. The 226 is not a bad choice either if you can swing it.

Not to confuse you but my local Academy also has a Beretta 92 Compact for around $450. I don't know how comfortable it will be to conceal carry since I have a full size but that's another worthy contender.

well the CZ has it, my store is getting two new CZ P-07s in soon but now i am back to the age old question of 9mm vs 40 S&W seeing as we will be getting one of each at the same price. Oh well i guess that is a question for some other time. As soon as i get the gun i will go out to the range and do a report.

Well, if you're going to consider the SP2022, then you should also take a look at the subcompact P250. Great gun - Love mine!
