A buddy of mine is a local cattle rancher and invited me along to keep him company on his pronghorn hunt this year. He had been watching a buck he called Jr. and had a pretty good idea where he was hanging out. We looked for him for about an hour and finally found a buck that we thought was him but it turned out it was a challenger who Jr. had just whipped up on.

After glassing the pasture we found Jr. the antelope are so used to the ranchers truck they didn’t care one bit when we drove into the pasture. My friend was able to step out and sit down as the buck and a doe calmly walked by at 200 yards. My rancher buddy sent a 125 Gr Barnes TSX through the bucks heart from his old tang safety Ruger 77 in 7MM Mag. The buck fell to the shot and never quivered.

After the shot all of the cattle in the south pasture came by for a look at Jr.

That gave my rancher friend a chance to show off his hand raised Hereford bull “Buddy” who came by to see if we had any cake in the truck for a mid morning snack.

Great story. Your friend has some good looking Herefords. I think they taste better than the best tasting pronghorn.;)

That is a fine bull and herd of cattle. Sorry, the bull kind of stole the show.

I guess that’s a good antelope buck as well.

It would be real interesting to hunt those open plains.

It can make for some long shots.
