Howdy,
So I got into the hunting thing late in the game. I'm 31 and just took my first deer. I shot her at 0830 in the morning after passing on another doe about an hour earlier. The first one never stopped, it kept up a good pace right across the trail and I never felt good about pulling the trigger. The second one fell to a Remington 150 gr core-lokt ammo out of my 30-06 at about 40 yards. BTW, it stayed together on entry and looks to have expanded a bit on its way out, but did significant damage to the vitals.
I had three days off from work to hunt and seem to have timed it well with the rut and the passing of Sandy. The temps dropped and finally yesterday the wind backed down. Wednesday was still windy and nothing was moving. But yesterday things finally came together. It took me a while to drag her out to my jeep, another 2-3 hours to skin, gut, and put on ice. After getting her home, it took me about 3 hours to clean, grind, season, and grind again. But now I have about 40 pounds of burgers and seasoned ground venison in the freezer. My day started at 0430. The last thing on my list yesterday was to salt the hide which I'll be tanning in the near future. I was done with it all around 1930, about an hour after the sun went down. Exhausted.
I've hunted deer for two years now. I passed on a small buck last year and was otherwise skunked. I shot at a smaller buck early this year, but could not find any blood after searching for two days. I am on the fence as to whether or not I hit him. But this doe dropped immediately with a shot through and through in the vitals.
Overall an amazing experience. The first pic is my stand set over a trail. I took the photo as the sun was working its way up. The second needs no explaining.
