Greetings all

I got my first gun way back in 1970, a Ted Williams .22 falling block carbine. I have been shooting ever since then. But I had never been to a gun show for a whole list of reasons, the big one being one was never being given when I had free time. All that changed this weekend. I knew of a small show going on just down the road. Our last Plinkette was at a church retreat, so I was free and clear of any responsibility for several hours, a rare treat for me, so after church, and feeding Mrs. Plinker at a KFC (fast, but not too fast) I dumped her off at home and headed out for the show.

On the way out the door I had warned her I might need to spend some money. Her response was emphatic: "You do NOT need to spend money just because you are going to the show." Right, just like, "You do not need to buy clothes just because you spend the day going to 25 different stores." I allowed that I probably wouldn't spend any money, but that if I ran across any really good deals, I would call and confer with her before I signed any papers or produced any cash.

I have read numerous threads here on different gunshow experiences, so I had an idea what to expect. As I arrived, I discovered that the parking lot was close to full, and there were the requisite people lounging about in various degrees of camouflage. There was a big sign stating no loaded weapons in the building, and while I could have lied (no one did more than ask) I had left my usual carry piece at home. The truck was still fully armed though, just in case bad guys were lurking about.

Getting into the show, I was immediatley struck by the number of relatively unkempt looking people, of which I was one, wandering about. This is not one of your yuppie shows, where people are walking about in expensive suits or whatever. I don't mean to suggest people were dressed like bums - uhh, I mean homeless people - just that there were a lot of Carhartt coats, heavy boots, dirty jeans, and other signs of country livin'. While the parking lot had more pick up trucks than cars, there were a few cars there, a number of them with Joisey plates. I wonder what they thought they might be buying today. :scrutiny:

But what I found to be true was what a lot of others have reported, or at least what I remember them reporting as I have read through threads. Used guns were priced like they were rare collector's items. If it were not for the general seediness of the displays, I would have thought I was in Cabela's gun library! I did not see any ninjas, mall, tactical, or otherwise, despite the number of camouflage clad individuals roaming about. At least, none were proffering advice unsolicited. There were the expected tables with Nazi memorabilia.

I scanned almost every table that had handguns on it. Most were not worth the time I spent looking at them. They were priced higher than Cabela's, and a lot higher than my favorite local gunshop. There were two items that caught my attention, one a Kel Tec 9mm P-11, and the other - well I'll get to that. :D I was not impressed with the price on the Kel Tec. I have a P3AT, and I really like it, and the price was okay, but not enough to inspire me to buy it right that minute. Besides, I already have a 9mm CZ. But the other...

I came upon it in the basement, i.e. the second level that the signs said I should be sure to check out. I asked the boy who was assisting the owner to produce it for me. He swept me once, twice, and on the third time as he struggled to get the action open, I asked him in a very polite tone to please not point the gun at me until he got it open so that we could verify that it was not loaded. He was somewhat embarrassed, and rightly so. I do not think his action was intentional, and I was pretty sure the gun was unloaded. Besides, he did not have his finger on the trigger, so I saw no need to blast off into orbit for incorrect handling. He was trying.

As it turned out, the gun was locked, and the owner produced the key in short order. I fiddled around with it a bit, and then thanked them for their time. I walked off to a reasonably quiet corner to call Mrs. Plinker. Did she say "hi!" like she normally does when I call her? No, she answered the phone (cell with caller ID) with an emphatic "NOOOOOO!!!" You would have thought I was buying a used car or something. I told her what I saw, and asked if she could check some prices on the internet, since she was sitting at her computer. After a little dickering, and some price checking, it turned out that the asking price was actually a very good one, and the piece in question was one in a caliber I did not have, and I did have the money in the account, and it might be an option for our daughter, so she said go ahead. So,I came home with this.

"This" is a Taurus PT 145 Millenium Pro, .45 ACP. It is quite compact, which I really like, and looks like it is going to be ideal for some carry situations. I also like the fact that it can hold as many as 11 rounds with one in the pipe. As it turns out, it fits Mrs. Plinker's hand, as well as that of the youngest Plinkette. I was able to find a couple of boxes of ammo for it. That was tough, and I was afraid I would not be able to shoot it for a few days, but I was fortunate, and I got to pull the bang switch a few times. All I got to shoot was snow, and recovery of brass was impossible, since it melted its way right down to the ground on impact, but this looks like a real nice gun to have and shoot. Now I need to get some stuff done for Mrs. Plinker to mollify her somewhat... :p

So why might this be my last gun show? I don't think she is going to let me out the door for a while. Upon my arrival home, she asked me how many more guns I was going to need before my collection was complete! :what: That was a scary question. I put her off for the time being, but I have got to be a good boy for a while.

PT 145

Nice gun I have the older model without the light rail on the front of it and it does make a very nice carry piece, in fact It is one of 2 guns that I regulary carry. I haven't tried this myself but was told at a very reputable gun store that this will in fact take the 12 round mags that were made for the Taurus 24/7 and with some epoxy you can make it look real nice. I plan on going to this particular store this week and will find out more info if you are interested.

I haven't been to a gun show in the last few years we no longer have them close to home, which is just fine with me they always seemed to have more beanie babies then guns so it was no big loss.

Yes but...
You will NEED ammo. holsters, magazines, bipods, cool little flashlights,MolonLabe T-shirts,grips and a whole lot of other gunshow stuff :)

Upon my arrival home, she asked me how many more guns I was going to need before my collection was complete!

ALL of them!!!! Mwah-HAHA!!!!

'Course, she probably wouldn't react well to that...;)

See you next weekend at the York County Fairgrounds?:D :D :D

PennsyPlinker,

While my wife is not 'anti'. . . she's not exactly sure why I have the firearms that I have. (Read as not exactly 'pro', either!)

I have heard numerous times, "Hun. . . You only have two hands, why do you need and have so many guns?"

My usual response that stops the conversation. . . .
"Dear. . . You only have two feet. Why do you have sooooooo many pairs of shoes?"

Lastly, after 'experiencing' as many years married to the same woman as I have, I don't discuss what I'm going to buy next.
I look at it this way. . . She works. I work. We have put two kids through college, and have two more to go.
The bills are paid (ON TIME) and we have plenty to eat.
She buys what the heck she wants to. . . I'm a big boy now. I don't need to (and don't) ask what I can and can't buy.

Waiting on a Range Report on your new acquisition!!!!!!

Was the show you went to at the Macungie Memorial Park building?

If so, I might have seen you there! I was there between 10 and 11:30am... Didn't notice anything that caught my eye, so I left. But I figure there aren't too many gun shows with multiple floors, one being in a basement.

Carhart and such

If I could afford new Carhart clothing I would not think the owners were all bad.
It's A differant world when a good set of working dud's are considered scruffy.
For less then half the price one can buy casual from a Box store, and be looking nice.
I don't understand the comment about being dressed in Carharts.
Consider the comparision of A new Highpoint pistol or a old Colt.

I told my fiance' "Baby, I like guns. I buy what I can afford. Its my hobby, please don't make it hard for me."

I have never heard another negative comment about them. That was six months and maybe $2000 ago.

I find that if I do some extra "nice " things just before the purchase of a new firearm, that it eases the harsh stare to a dumb look. I must have hit the jack pot when i found my wife cause she always seems to want me to carry a firearm where ever we go so I'm able to get New ones to just stay fashionable! hehehe at least that's what I say. nice gun by the way. I got the same one but in the .40 cal.

Nothing derogatory about dressing in Carhartts at all, especially since that is a big part of my own wardrobe! And that was my point. This was a country show full of country people - no flash and glitz, and I fit right in. Perhaps unkempt was not a good choice of words. My exact meaning was unpolished, which is one of the meanings of the word, although probably not the most familiar.

General Geoff, that is the show! I did not get there until a little before 2:00 PM though. I've been wanting to get to the one they have there just off Tilghman St, but it never seems to come around when I have the time to go. Like I said, the only two things that really impressed me were the Kel Tec and this Taurus. There was a guy in front of me buying a really beat looking Nagant pistol from the same dealer, but other than that I did not see a lot of money changing hands. People seemed to be in a decent mood, and I had trouble finding some ammo for it, but I have no idea how the show went overall for the vendors.

For the rest of you, she is real good about letting me buy what I want, and I let her buy what she wants. She is not anti at all, although she is not really into carrying, and only shoots on occasion. But we have been married for a long time, and a big reason for that is each of us keeping the other happy, not looking our for ourselves. I don't think I am going to make it to York though 45Badger!

Nigtmare68, she is actually more comfortable if I am carrying than if not (which is easy to say I guess, since I am always carrying). But when I explained that this might also be a good choice for our daughter, who is about to get her first gun in a few weeks as a gift from us, she relented somewhat. She would be very unhappy if the govmint came up with a one gun a month rule for all of us, but I think she would be glad for her own one gun a month for me. :p

I haven't been to a gun show in several months. After my 100th-or-so show, I realized that everything there I either: 1) have, or 2) don't want.

I have no reason to buy ammo at a gun show, as the good deals (if there are any these days) are found on the internet.

I've never understood the need to wear camo to a gun show, either. I don't have a problem with it, but to me camo is purpose-specific clothing, much like pajamas or scuba gear.

I should be at the York show in a couple of weeks. I just have to keep telling myself that I'm only there to see the ammo guy that sets up out front. Hoping he has Wolf .308. And 7.62x39 and .45acp. Don't think about the guns! Gotta get ammo.

I'll be headed to my first gun show this coming Saturday, with my brother. he is hoping to snag a WASR... otherwise we hit the pawn shop afterwards :neener:

Unfortunately I won't be buying any guns (sad huh :( )

Yes it's true. You'll need to accessorize. Should your good
woman ask the question again regarding how many more
weapons it may take, etc...Perhaps your answer could be
when she is satisfied with the amount of shoes she has,
you too will deem your collection to be complete. :)

Better yet, maybe you should lay low until things cool a
bit. ;)

Awe come on.....don't tease...

how much did you pay for the PT-145?

as for the brass....it'll still be there in the spring. Just remember where you were standing.

Well I am sure someone will be able to tell me they did better, or could, but I got it for $315 plus tax. Mrs Plinker found the list price, plus a couple of places asking as much as $414 for it, and a couple of posts that quoted prices of around $285 well over a year ago. She was happy, and so was I. Two boxes of .45 ACP set me back $13.64 each, and he was the only guy left with any at all. That meant I got to shoot it right away though.

Yeah, I know the brass will be there in the spring, along with the brass from everyone else who doesn't pick theirs up. I always pick up as much of mine as I can find, and often clean up that of others. Of course, now that I am shooting .45 ACP and reloading, I may end up lurking around at the end of the IDPA matches they run over there. I see lots of .45 brass lying around and not just at this range.

A complete collection is a subjective term. Mine could use a few items to be well rounded but how would I ever complete it?

It reminds me of Tim "the Toolman" Taylor telling his wife Jill, "There's no such thing as a tool I don't need!"

She'll be fine in a few days, and she knows I won't spend the mortgage or the grocery money. It's just a good idea to lay low for a while. The berst purchases are the ones she gets the idea that she might like to shoot too. Even if she only shoots them once or twice, that is all it takes.

 Drive to the hood you'll see just as many carharts as you will in the country. ;)
