I know how much everyone loves these Walmart threads, especially Justin. But this is a good one. :)

I was forced by the youngest Plinkette to take her shopping for Mrs. Plinker's Christmas presents, and she wanted to go to Walmart. I figured since I was there, I would pick up a couple of boxes of .45 ACP at the sporting goods counter. When I got there, there were two people crouched over a cart FULL of cases of 12 ga shotgun shells. One was a customer, the other an employee I had never seen before at that counter.

To make a long story a little shorter, the customer walked out with just under $600 worth of 12 ga shells! Actually, it was more like struggled out, since he could barely get the cart to move. As soon as he was around the corner, the employee made a face and asked me in a hushed voice,

"What's he going to do with all that? Is it even legal to have that much ammunition?" :uhoh:

So I engaged him in a friendly conversation. I explained that there was no law against owning a lot of "bullets", and that there really did not need to be. I then explained that the guy was probably stocking up for trap shooting, and that it would not take him long to shoot through that much ammo, even though it seemed like a lot. Secretly I'm thinking, MAN, I wish I had $600 for cartridges! Then I told him I would like to be able to spend that much, but that I had to buy mine in small amounts with small unmarked bills so Mrs. Plinker did not catch me at it too often! :p He thought about it some and decided that it must not be such a bad thing after all.

Every little bit helps when we get a chance to talk to people unfamiliar with guns. I have found that being friendly with those people at Walmart goes a long way next time I am in the store. But beyond that, it is hopefully one more person who does not see us as automatically evil because of our pastime.

I'm surprised it didn't require a forklift.

There are a lot of trap and skeet clubs that buy ammo in bulk at Walmart ... so in all likelihood he's not going to shoot all that himself anyway.

You know, this does point out that to the uninformed, non-gunowning citizen, what may seem like an outrageous amount of ammunition to them might not even meet our minimum requirement for one range session.

The last time I took my daughter to the range, she and I burned through 500 rounds of 9mm and 200 rounds of .45 ACP (yeah, she's starting to enjoy shooting) -- yet the news anchors will always report in amazed, hushed tones that police found an arsenal of "several" firearms and --- gasp -- more than 500 rounds of live ammunition in someone's private residence ...

Yeah, we've got to continue to educate the unenlightened (taking someone shooting and letting 'em find out for themselves just how fast ammo disappears is a good thing), so you did well.

Be nice to everyone, including the uninformed. That's my policy.

That is...until it's time to not be nice anymore. :D

You never know who you're talking to and how it may effect your life down the road.

$600.00/$3.50 per box = Appx 171 boxes X 25 per = 4,275 rounds. That's a nice start to hunting season. :)

Edit to add:

PennsyPlinker:

Back in the mid-1990s, I thought my hunting and shooting days were forever over because of a severe car accident. I was at the range firing my .22LR and met a gentleman firing a T/C Contender in 7X30 Waters. He was simply form-firing for some handloads.

Well, when I asked what the heck that thing was, not only did he tell me, he showed me and allowed me to fire it. I left the range after a quick handshake and rushed right out and bought one!!! By golly, I was back into hunting with no shoulder recoil issues. Just one more example of how someone taking some time saved one person's shooting career/hobby...mine!!!

Since that day, I have paid the favor forward a dozen times at least; I'll never stop paying it forward. Thanks Bubb...whomever you were.

in other news, I was caught at a Chinese buffet the other day with more than 2000 grains of rice in my bowl! there should be a law against that much starch.

Thanks for the story Doc! Of course, I am a firm believer in doing good deeds whenever possible - Golden Rule and all that.

Don't laugh, it is coming. When They get done with the tobacco smokers, fat people are on the list. In fact, we already are!

Now I have to go hide my bullets before Mrs. Plinker finds them.

I agree that`s not a whole lot. It`s only about 10 to 12 cases. My father bought 20 cases online last year because of a good price. He`s down to about 8 or 10 cases now. And he shot most of these shells himself.

Good job. :)

We have to understand that the average citizen may have hobbies other than shooting, whether it be for sport, recreation, competition, or hunting.

They're constantly bombarded with news stories of people being robbed at gunpoint, murdered with guns, and with the recent shootings in the news, it's natural to associate firearms negatively with death, rather than as a sport.

Education is key.

I happy to say that I have never found any member of the gun fraternity that wasn't willing to share information, show you a new toy, or lend a helping hand!

the gun fraternity

Off topic, and FWIW, I agree that gun folk tend to be good people. But I cringe when I see that term. Please please don't alienate half the voting population. We're much more than a fraternity. We're a community and a culture. And there are skilled and knowledgeable women throughout it.

Yeah I always got strange looks when I went into Walmart and bought every box of 9mm ammo.

Tomorrow I will be receiving 2,000 rounds of 9mm and 500 rounds of 223, just enough for the next month.

Ladies you'll have to excuse my choice of words. You see I'm just a plain old country boy and don't get tied up with a lot of this political correctness BS. I still open doors for the ladies, get up and give them my seat, and all of the non-politically correct things that apparently most of the younger generation was never taught or has forgotten. So ladies if I offended you, I offer my sincere apologies.

And siglite, I've seen terms used on here that I don't like, i.e., gun porn, but I haven't tried to take anyone to task over their choice of words, so if you don't like mine, go pound sand and get over it!

And yes I agree that we are more then a fraternity, that "we're a community and a culture."

Perhaps you should take them to task for it. Since further conversation along these lines will certainly result in major thread drift, I'll gladly discuss this further with you in PM, if you so desire.

There's an awful lot of reason behind my point than is not included in my post, and I'll gladly share it with you. And I probably won't even tell you to pound sand, goats, or anything else.
