For a true woods gun .357 is minimum

I would want a .44 mag or a .45 LC SAA
I think it depends upon what woods you're in.

A lot of woods in the lower 48 states have few large predators.
Some areas have no large predators.
 
If you reload or are thinking about reloading, get the .357. It's such a joy to eject 6 casings into your hand instead of having to crawl around picking them up after your pistol has scattered them all over. :)

I like both pistols and revolvers, but as a fairly new reloader I find myself enjoying revolvers more now.
