Nearly forgot to post this. Couple weeks ago I went on a two night camping hunt on our family property. Decided this year I needed to get out there before all the leaves have fallen and that means squirrel hunting in the weeks before blackpowder season opens. I'm working my way towards camping out of a backpack, instead of hauling everything I own in my truck. Trying out a new tent cot from Teton Sports that's proven interesting.

I reconfigured my Ruger American rimfire for this trip. Came in a 6.8lbs with a Burris mini 4x. Posted about it here: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/lightweight-but-not-too-light-squirrel-rifle.923764/

I had picked this spot out on top of a ridge a couple weeks beforehand and when I arrived, this little dead cedar had been rubbed by a buck.

It ended up being right in the way of my tarp shelter, so down it went. I ended up using nearly the whole thing. Used the bark for tinder and cut it up for making toggles, a baton for splitting wood, a pot scraper, bacon turner and to raise my ridgeline.

Took a picture of my cat hole, so you get the full experience.

Fishing the old man's pond was a bust so the first night I had MRE chilli and coffee over the fire.

Next morning after bacon and eggs, I packed some of those MRE snacks for lunch and set out. We have a lot of cool rock formations on the property, this is one of them.

I managed two squirrels in the first half hour but they both had botfly larvae so I stopped hunting and just explored.

I walked for about 3.5hrs and made it back to camp for lunch, where I inhaled those MRE snacks I'd packed. After a short rest, I decided to go back to the pond. Figured out t hat I was missing fish before because the drag was set too low on the reel, as it was new and had only been used to catch the tiny fish in our creek at home. With that sorted, I caught three nice bass, a crappie and two catfish.

That night I ended up cooking a water buffalo steak with baked beans. No pics of that for some dumb reason.

I had a miserable might's sleep with my head/neck issues. So I was up at 4am starting a fire and brewing coffee.

Breakfast a short time after.

Had a great time and will probably do it again in the next week or two.

Limit is 10 pics so here's the rest.

Thoroughly impressed with my new gear. Numbat chest pack and Foxtrot buttpack from Helikon Tex and a beavertail assault pack from AWS. The Numbat is like most other chest packs. The Foxtrot is basically an updated version of the military LBV H-harness butt pack. These are web pics.

This is the AWS Assault pack. It's a tidy little thing and I added two Helikon sustainment pouches to it.

Nice adventure and writeup, thanks for sharing. Nice looking crappie too! I enjoy fishing as much or more than hunting. I mostly catch and release though, which is hard with a deer. Those rock formations are very cool, that would be one of my favorite spots. I have a spot or two like that on my property I like to hang out.

How do you tell if a squirrel has botfly larvae? I obviously know nothing about this subject
This is about the tamest pic I could find, they're nasty looking. Looks like a cyst about the size of an olive just under the skin, with a small opening where the critter breathes. I don't think they affect the meat but the idea of eating a squirrel with them is off-putting.

Me too. My friends and I used to fish all the time when I was in my 20's living in Florida. We always threw them back. It's become a habit. My original plan was to eat a few the first night but once I started catching them the 2nd day, I just couldn't do it. All the fish I caught were like that, real light colored and silvery. That crappie (we used to call them specks) shined like a mirror.

Man that looks fun, wish I had someone to go do that type of stuff with. Many deer hunters would have a better season if they got out early and snooped around after some small game.

I agree it looks fun, and I agree that we would all be better off if we scouted more. Alas, there just isn’t enough time. I’m basically heading into deer season blind. Thank goodness for cellular trail cameras.

Cool write up. Will check in on that AWS pack. Been trying to find a similar Markhor one in the states.

Looked like you got a few for the pot. Your squirrel rifle post a few weeks back kinda got me fired up to get up to the cabin and maybe hike the ridges with me old Marlin 882, but of course, as soon as I got that thought they put us on 12 hours 7 days

Good onya and thanks for sharing Craig

Botflys ruin my early season squirrel hunting in Alabama. Seems to me that the closer you are to livestock/cows the more botflies that are in the squirrels.the farther away I can get the better in the early season around me. Looks like you had a good time.

I’ve watched my wife pull bot fly larvae out of dogs and cats multiple times. I do t think they’d affect the meat but yeah they are gross!

Back when I used to help milking cows, we would pop them like zits off the cow's back as we were waiting for the milker to finish. They do not affect meat quality at all, but yes, they are gross. Here in Wisconsin they infect the nasal cavities of deer. During warm weather, you can sometimes see deer "blow" their nose and shake their heads from the irritation, but they have no impact at all on the deer's health.

I never made it back to the woods. The chronic headaches coupled with long-COVID fatigue have taken all the fun out of this fall. I've been going to a chiropractor regularly but it doesn't seem to be helping.

The botfly larvae don't affect the meat, it's more of a mental thing.

Does that chestpack have room for your SD pistol?
I wish my Hill People chest rig was a little bigger. Binos and pistol pretty well fill it.
It does. I should've taken a picture of it, along with the rest of the gear. I had one of my XD9's in it. Hung my binoculars off the front with 1/8" shock cord and carabiners. Don't think it has room for both inside. Put the bino pouch on my belt for when it's not needed. It was also the first outing with my new Swarovskis.

Google removing “bot fly larva”. It’s a common pest in areas of the world, often people get them on the upper back above the shoulders.

It’s oddly satisfying, weird and nasty to watch.
