Well, I finally went to an IDPA match today. It was a real blast. We shot the classifier and I think I finished either first or second, earning a sharpshooter rating in SSP. First time ever shooting from a holster, too.

P.S. I love my Glock 17!

congratulations. during the actual shooting scenario, did it get to seeming real to you?
before the buzzer its a game. often , after the buzz- you are so focused and it becomes your world.

ahh....classifier only you shot. i think you will catch my drift after a couple of sceanieros. enjoy.

I wouldn't say it seemed real, but I was definitely focussed on what I was doing. I had no perception of if I was going fast or slow, just concentrating on getting good sight pictures.

Can you explain the "classifier"? I'd love to get into all kinds of competitive shooting, but I'd suck, and it would be cool to start off slowly and with very basic courses of fire.

I'm not too afraid of looking like a loser, just as long as I'm safe, not annoying the more experienced, and having fun. Then I just have to find the money and time. :(

"...but I'd suck..." That doesn't matter. Competitive shooting, of any kind, is great fun even if you're not the best shooter. Nobody will ever laugh at you if your scores are low. It's just not done. You'll meet all kinds of great people, most of whom will bend over backwards to help you. Including letting you shoot their pistols. In any case, both IDPA and IPSC are shooting games and nothing more.
"...as long as I'm safe..." Having that in your head means you can just go shoot because it's fun. Nobody really asks or expects anything more of you.
Money and time is another thing altogether. It doesn't have to cost you a big pile of money thing. You reloading? Shooting factory ammo gets expensive quickly.
A 'classifier' is a 90 round shoot designed to literally classify your shooting skills so you don't end up shooting against shooters who have greater shooting skills than you do. You have to have a 'cover garment' too so you can pretend you're carrying concealed. Go here for the course of fire. Rummage around the site for more info. http://www.idpa.com/classify.asp

Welcome to my favorite sport. This was my first year of IDPA and I have fallen in love with it. Met a few new friends, and enjoyed every minute of it. I got into it on a shoestring, but ........
