A while ago I was trying to make up my mind on a rifle for home defense and plunking. I decided on the Hi Point sight un-seen.

I got the package with my Hi Point Carbine in 9mm this week. Without shooting it, my gut impression was that I really liked it - no I loved it. It was basically just what I wanted. I wanted a carbine - not a rifle. I wanted something durable. This gun fits the bill. It is build solid - maybe even a bit crude. But for the price - what's the big problem? It is light for a rifle, but it is heavier than I expected it would be. I hear the stock is hollowed - but if you told me it was solid plastice I'd believe that. And that is what it is - a hard plastic gun, except for the barrel, and receiver.

I took it out to the range today. I put a 8 inch Shoot N C bulls eye out to 55 feet. In my first clip all bullets hit the Shoot N C. This is saying something in that I have not shot a rifle/carbine for probably 30 years. I tuned in the open site for windage. Next trip I'll still need to adjust for vertical. Right now, I'm about as accurate with pistol. I'll reserve any further comments on accuracy until I set the sight for vertical, and run another box or so thru the carbine. The good news - no jams in the first box I put thru it. Very reliable so far. Overall I really like the carbine.

EDIT:

The down side is that I heard there are 15 round clips available from ProMag. Since I ordered, I have yet to find one person that can get the 15 round clips to feed properly.

Stock clip holds 10 rounds. I have the butt-mounted magazine holder. It holds 2 magazines. So my idea is ten, then re-load, ten then reload.

A good gun priced so lots and lots of citizens can and will buy it has got to be one of the more valuable fitearms around.

What capacity magazines does it take? How does the recoil feel (I ask the recoil question because, a couple weeks ago, I got to fondle and shoot a USC and I found its recoil annoying and unpleasant. Not painful in any way just... icky)?

Glad you've found true, inexpensive love. :D

Additionally: Nice touch in the picture with the ruler for scale. Numbers don't always adequately get across just how big or small a firearm is.

I bought one when they first came out

a few years ago...Yes, they're kinda ugly....Yes, they're kinda cheap looking...But, mines reliable as a brick, I've used lots of cheapo (including steel cased and aluminum case Blazer, up to +P+), have never had a malfunction...Its a great plinker, and I also use it to turn non-shooters into shooters (light, handy, virtually no recoil)....Some say they are hard to dissasemble and clean...But, I wouldn't know, as I've never dissasembled it that far, just routine cleaning, and its probably got 4-5000 rounds fired through it...Can't vouch for the true accuracy, as I only shoot offhand at shorter ranges (as its primarily a HD weapon), but I can keep 'em all in a 5-6" circle at 25 yards, which is fine for its purpose...In short, it was the best $165 I ever spent.

MARTINS -

Recoil is reasonable. I did get a cheek-slap a couple times. But I think this is because of my ignorance on how to properly shoot a rifle - that is to have my cheek tight up against the stock. Once I hugged the stock, I did not have any problems.

I'm going to add an edit to my original post. But the down side is that I heard there are 15 round clips available from ProMag. Since I ordered, I have yet to find one person that can get the 15 round clips to feed properly.

With this in mind, I probably would get more fire-power from the Kel-Tec sub 2000. But I'm not a fan of their pistolds, and the break-apart aspect had no advantage for me. If I was comfortable having a loaded gun around, I wpould have just gone with a used 12 gauge, and called it a day. (But all this is gone over in a previous post - I don't want to re-hash.)

Dfaugh -

Yup - I heard disassemble was a bear. But apparently a dis-assembly to clean is optional with this gun!!! Ha!

That is one of the only guns I have owned that I sold before I ever shot it. I bought it from a friend that just needed the money and I could stand to look at it anymore. It is a shame because I hear that they are acurate and reliable. Just too cheap feeling for me.

There is an 1892 Winchester 32-20 (hex barrel) that has been in the family since my great-grand father. The 1892 seems like it has better build quliaty than the Hi-Point. BUT, the Hi-Point has a 100% sucess ratio. (so far.)

Glad you're happy with your new gun. Although people will lament over "combat ranges" until the cows come home I enjoy seeing hits at 400yds with my 9mm pistol. I'm not hunting wildebeast, just hitting steel more often than not. You might find that your sight picture is really wild but once you get used to it, it can be a ton of fun.

I have the exact same model, I call it the Luke Skywalker/Han Solo edition with that chrome finish on it :D

I've been equally pleased with mine....for $100 it's been a real cheap date.

People dog these guns, but if you keep things in perspective...that they are nothing more than a cheap fun gun......you'll enjoy the heck out of this thing.

Norton - Oh ! You got a better deal than I did. I did want the chrome. I know, not very practical - but I think it improves the looks.

If it makes you feel better, I got mine used ;)

I'm thinking that this gun might make an excellent candidate for me to hone my Duracoat skills. How about a carbine with olive drab on top and HK satin black on the bottom

I got mine for $70 used. Shoots great, just got to get a new screw to hold down the rear sight.

The only problem I have is the recoil. It recoils into my cheek, leaving it tender. Not a bad recoil, just different. Other than that, I love the gun.

Just be sure to NOT get the 15 round ProMag Magazines. I have 3 and I'm still d*cking around, trying to get them to work.:banghead: Looking on the internet for a good sourse of the factory mags, plan on buying a few.

UPDATE:

I tuned in the sites. Took it out to the range. Put the target out to 55 feet. Geez that thing is accurate. It really surprised me.

Other good news - about 200 rounds thru the carbine. No jams or mis-feeds.
