Wow, that was fun despite being a little cool outside. Got the chance to wheel out my 1911 and a 1911/Marvel .22 that don't get much trigger time usually. I also got in a fair amount of practice with my USPSA G34, followed by slaying some evil pins from 10 yards out with an AR.

Best string of the day was a 3.73 which seems "good" until I see old results where some notable IPSC guy ran a 1.69 string as part of a 8.7 four string relay. Not suprisingly I did best with what I shoot most, that being the drastic plastic. I was pleasantly suprised that my practice load took pins down nicely, the load is a 115 Berry's going about 1140. I was worried about RN 9mm not doing much to a pin, but I think the very soft lead of the plated bullets works nicely. I had a few old rounds of EFMJ to burn, those things launch pins. Rimfire was fun, with only one bad string where my conversion unit had a ridiculous jam. Shooting the 1911 was a nightmare, every pin I hit was down and spinning on the table. Lack of practice with gun coupled with light loaded 230rn lead bullets did me no favors. :banghead:

The observation of going slower to go faster once again reared its ugly head. Another problem was I forgot everything I "knew" about shooting steel which is similar. Instead of shooting and tracking to the next target I was trying to observe my hits and pick up misses instead of coming back through later. Then I got the idea to just index and shoot one at each and then pick up misses. Well, I did, just a little too fast. The first pass across the table was 5 misses and then I traversed back across the table with 5 pick-up hits in about 6 sec. So stupid, must work on index and that front sight press thingy.

Pin shooting in general. Everyone should try this. It is fun, an ideal match for an informal club atmosphere. No super space gun needed, no athletic ability needed. Run whatever you brung, SA sixgun or .38super blaster. Easy match to set up, need some cheap plywood tables, some stopwatches, and lots of old bowling pins. If you are in a private club, try to organize a match, I plan on doing so in the semi-near future. I have ulterior motives since this looks like a great "gateway drug" to hook people into practical pistol matches. Pin shooting is certainly off it's heyday but there is no reason for it to be save the loss of Second Chance. More clubs need to do this!

This was once a very pouplar sport in my area but recently it just died out.

I used to really enjoy it and was just starting to get good when everyone else got bored with it and quit.

Navy Joe, where in Va did you shoot? I really want to try pin shooting myself, but I can never seem to hook up with a place that does it.

Chris

Not near you, VaBch Rifle and Pistol club, vbrpc.org in beautiful downtown Pungo, VA. I'm sure that somebody up in NoVa/MD must run these things. I don't pity you if not, you have access to indoor IPSC at Shooters Paradise. :)
