Let me start by saying that I realize I'm an idiot. That should reduce the number of comments to that effect coming my way. :p

I finished setting up my shiny new Hornady LNL AP press today and thought I would work on the powder measurement for my 45ACP rounds. I have the pistol rotor/insert on order, but figured, what the heck, I'll try the "rifle" one that came with the press to see how accurate it is at smaller measurements. A couple of cases and measurements later, I decide I'll pull the insert to see how easy it will be to changeovers. Suffice it to say, I dumped half a tube of powder. AT LEAST I was smart enough to be holding a cottage cheese container underneath it as I was removing it.

(letting the laughter subside)

What is the proper way (positioning of press parts) to ensure that I can remove an insert without dumping all of the powder. Is it in the complete UP position?

Thanks!

It doesn't have to be completely in the up position. Somewhere past half way should.

PS: Don't feel bad! I did the same thing! I stuck my thumb in the hole and only spilled an ounce or so.

Probably the best (or the least messy) way to do this is to remove the powder measure from the press, dump the powder in an appropriate container, than change the micrometer insert.

Regards,

Dave

I've used the LnL progressive for over seven years (and over 40K rounds) for handgun calibers and never even knew about the "pistol rotor" until I joined this forum.

Thousands of those rounds were 3.2gr of 231 for lead swc in 38 spl.

So I don't plan on buying one.

Back to the thread... I remove the whole assembly to empty the hopper back into the powder container at the end of a session, s'pose that would work for changing the meter.

You'll love your progressive! I bought a second LnL to use and got those free bullets!

I have an insert that you replace the meter with.

I put my powder pan under the drop tube and raise the metering insert about 3/4 of the way up. I pull out the inseret and put in the powder dump insert spout. The lower that down While holding the bottle of powder under it and it runs out into the bottle.

By being here you've proved you're not an idiot. You were ignorant about how to perform a part change on your powder measure. Now you have shared your experience and learned something about how to avoid it thus curing the ignorance. Others have learned as well. No, not an idiot at all.

Welcome to The High Road! Stick around, I think you'll like it here.
