first revolver...thanks for the help

After reading up here for a bit I decided I was in the market for either a used S&W 686 or a used Ruger GP100. Had been calling local gun shops periodically without luck.

Well today I thought I'd see if I couldn't track something down at a gun show. Sure enough I ended up taking home a 4" 686. From what I've read and comparing to pictures, I'm guessing its from the early 80s but seems to be in good shape. Think I did alright with it at $450. Now I'm just itching to it to a range and put some rounds through it.

Just wanted to share my excitement and say thanks, this forum was a huge help.

Excellent find, and that's a pretty good price given the current market. Good luck and enjoy it. All things considered in terms of balance, beauty, and overall functionality I truly believe the 4" 686 comes as close as possible to revolver perfection.

I've never shot a 686 but I hear from a lot of ppl that it is one of the sweetest if not the best revolvers out there.

Like you thought either would have been fine. I like the trigger a little better on the M686. I have a M686-2 and the trigger is unbelievable. The M686 is a great revolver (as is the GP100) and like said above, it will serve you well.

Haha ya I sort of saw that coming, don't have a digi cam but think I'll try to borrow one in the next few days. And ya, the show was in Burlington. VT has its merits, but a lot of drawbacks as well.

Congratulations! The stock trigger on a S&W double action revolver is incomparable . . . and only gets sweeter with a custom pull if you ever desire.

Rugers are fine guns, but the S&W trigger pull is the dealmaker for me.

Great price on a fine, fine revolver!

enjoy..........I shoot more rounds thru my 6'' 686 than all my other centerfire handguns put together. Whenever I'm at the range it's the one my two boys and my friends all prefer to shoot. Not only is it accurate, but a pleasure to shoot.

Those grips are nice, however I would put a Pachmayr Presentation grip on it. Just my opinion.

I really don't like rubber/plastic grips from an aesthetic standpoint. I'd consider wood hogues or ahrends. But it's not on the top of the list. First I need to get it to the range and do some shooting, and perhaps pick up a holster.

Nice choice , one of my favorites! Makes me miss the 4" 686 I used to have! Also had a 2 1/2" at one time. Miss that one too! Well ,I still have my 686-4 6"

Nice grab, you know you can't go wrong with a good revolver.My first pistol was a S&W .357

BTW I went with Hogue rubber grips instead of the wooden ones.

Nice Job!!! If I could only keep just one of my many revolvers it would be my 4" 686 no-dash (i just hate those damn locks). Get some good quality leather, some speed loaders and speed strips and have a BLAST. Once again, great find!

Nice find, My first handgun was a used no-dash 4" 686. Its a fine firearm and will serve you well. Enjoy.

Now, I have to ask. Did you use a black lab as a presentation to take that picture?!

You made an excellent choice. Packmayr grips aren't put on revolver s for the looks; they are put on to use because they work vey well. They help to keep the revolver from rotating inside your hand.

If your hand is large enough the original grips should be fine. If you hand is a little smaller and you want a set of wood grips that are good looking and will work well to tame the recoil give Badger Grips a look. I have a few sets of Rosewood grips on my J frames and they are great. I'm thinking about getting a set for my M686 too.
