Gentleman.
I think it is time to buy me my first revolver.
But i'm not looking for something new and modern.
I love the look of top break revolvers. There is just something in the design that makes me want to get one.
Not many of those out there. I'm thinking older H&R model but really want the Webley style gun. I think there were some Enfield made revolvers looking like smaller version of Webley issued to the tank crews. I saw one or two at the local gun shows, prices are manageable, one thing i'm not sure is the ammo. Are those chambered for 38 Special ? The regular 38 Special from the shelf will do ? Or do i have to pay small fortune for special ammo or start reloading ?
Any pointers please ?
TIA,
Cezar.

.38 caliber Webley's are not chambered for .38 special, but an older less powerful cartridge .38/200 which is basically a .38 Smith & Wesson with a 200 grain bullet.

A S&W model 10 or 15 would be a very good place to start. Everyone should have at least one S&W K-frame in their collection. You could also look at the S&W models 13, 19, 64, 65, 66, and 67. The 13, 19, 65, and 66 are 357 Magnums but will also safely handle 38 Special.

I remember when I was gettin my first gun which I had decided was going to be a revolver) I was looking at the top break designs more specifically the baretta one though I can't remember its name in 38 special. I ended up deciding against it due to the flaws associated with a top break design and went with a ruger gp100, more modern a design than most revolvers currently on the market and it has served me well and still stands as my favorite gun I've purchased.

hope this helps,

ocelot

If it doesn't have to be a .38 or a double action. I recommend the Heritage .22LR/.22Mag Single action revolver. Great shooting gun, and shoots, and shoots, and shoots. It is accurate as well. And doesn't cost very much.

My first revolver was a Dan Wesson 357. Its a heavy frame gun, I can run hot loads through it or 38's. It has interchangable barrels and I have the 2, 4, 6 and 8 inch barrels.

The dont make them anymore.

But I would reccomend a Ruger 357 so you can look at hot loads or 38's for fun or in between for self defense.

Your first revolver will not be a specific use gun, so buy one you can do a lot with. Withg a 4 inch barrel its great for self defense, hiking, hunting or IDPA competition.

If you got a 2 inch it is much more specific in use. Or an 8 inch (Long range shooting)

I agree with the advisors who touted the S&W .38/ .357 revolver choice.
The revlover, being more simple in operation, is an exceptional home defense weapon andf if you get to the point where you want to reload, .38/.357 components are avilable PLUS it's easier to save your "empties" with a revolver verses an auto.
Go Ruger or Smith and stay hassle free!

1) S&W K frame series

2) S&W L frame series

3) Ruger Security Six series

4) Ruger GP-100 series

I like Bannockburn's list.

Learning to master a DA revolver pull is not something you want to make harder than you have to. A S&W K in .38 special is a great first place to start. The gun design has been in continuous production since the late nineteenth century, so it sure would be a "classic."

If you really want a neat one, hunt around on gunbroker until you find a correct pre-1950 model; you often can for about $300 or sometimes less. I would put off the crankier top breaks and odd calibers until having first mastered the platform.

I recommend the Heritage .22LR/.22Mag Single action revolver. Great shooting gun, and shoots, and shoots, and shoots. It is accurate as well. And doesn't cost very much.

I second that. My dad gave me his because "I can't hit a tin can at 10 yards with it" I ran 500 rounds through it and now it's one of my best shooters. It's also scary accurate using CCI 22 CB shorts.

Gentleman.
Thank you all, your opinions and recommendations are noted and greatly appreciated.
But being stubborn and bull headed i decided to pursue my original desire for old British style revolver and will go after one of those.

Will have to find the way to deal with price of ammo, but this is just the way it is.
Thanks again,
Cezar.
