I'm looking to pick up my first AR, preferably in .308. This will be my only rifle for SD, SHTF, etc. What manufacturers have the best reputation currently? Are there any to avoid?

Thanks

Not sure, since I built my two from kits 10 years ago. Real gawd awful Fankinrifles, but they work flawlessly.

A lot of people seem to like the new S&W AR due to it's price point and high build quality.

Ruger has a new AR out with a piston design instead of the dreaded gas-tube. It looks like a good value and Ruger is a decent company in my book.

Sorry, see now you were interested in .308 ARs. Smith and Ruger ain't goin' there, yet. If that's what you want then it's gonna be an Armalite or a Remington. Who else makes a .308 AR? Seems like there was one more.

+1 for Rock River Arms

I haven't had any experience with their 308 models, but I love the 5.56 models.

If you can somehow get one, might look into one of the Knights Armament M110.

(not actually sure it is for sale to the public...I haven't been able to find one...)

there always the original armalite

then offerings from dpms and rock river.

i believe the best bang for buck will be the dpms rifles, with rr being a close second.

the armalites will be higherin price, but similar quality.

I'd get one from POF ... this is the one I'm hoping to buy this year.

You didn't mention your budget and this one is fairly expensive at $2,600. Add some Troy BUIS and a good 3-10X scope wearing a LaRue QD mount and you'd never look back. I have to wonder why someone would pay a similar amount or more for an SA58/FAL from DSA when they could buy this from POF.

:)

I recommend a .223 AR15, otherwise maybe look for something else in .308. The AR15 hasn't really been baptized in the .308 caliber quite the same way it has with the .223.
