Greeting all long time lurker first time poster. I have finally given up on finding the AR I want in my price range and have decided to build one. Had my eyes set on an 18 inch 1x8 twist chrome lined 4150 barrel wylde chamber(which apparently doesn't exist ) rifle length gas system, flat top with a free float rail and either a magpul ubr or bushmaster skeleton stock. The rifles intended purpose would be target shooting, coyote/ groundhog hunting and SD/shtf. The purpose of this post was whether m4 feed ramps were necessary on a rifle length gas system( or at all) and opinions on the wylde chamber for a sd firearm and having a 20 inch barrel cut down . I like the idea of the wylde chamber so I don't have to be to picky on training ammo or pass up on good ammo deals. Any opinions or advice for a first time AR owner is welcome thanks.

M4 feedramps aren't needed but make sure that if your upper has them, the barrel assembly does as well. BCM has the non-ramped uppers if you need one.

Not worth cutting down a 20" barrel IMO. Pointless to have a chrome lined barrel for what you want as well. A quality stainless barrel will have a higher likelihood of being a tack driver and will be more than durable enough. I would get a Wylde chamber.

BCM and a few other regularly stock 18" 1:8 stainless barrels in various contours with rifle gas systems.

I'd recommend the ACE skeleton stock. It looks to be the exact same thing as Bushmaster's but $40-50 less.

I have one and it is sold.

The 5.56 chamber is less picky about ammo than the 223 Wylde

Never heard the Wylde chamber referred to as "picky". In fact the only pickiness I've seen or heard about on an AR has to do with gas system length and the longer rifle gas system is the least prone to gas problems and the most reliable.

I have a 16" carbine 1:9 nato, 18" rifle 1:8 nato and a 20 rifle 1:8 wylde. They all shoot any brass ammo i feed it. I dont shoot steel case. I do like the 1:8 for competition.

Look at Palmetto State Amory. They have a couple of nice uppers. They have a 16" midlength, wylde, 1:8, stainless.

Didn't say the 223 Wylde chambering was picky. Said the 5.56 chamber was less picky. ballisticsoup wants a rifle that will shoot most any 5.56/223 ammo and the 5.56 chamber fits that requirement best.

It would have been less confusing, I suppose if I had said the 5.56 was more forgiving. A standard 223 chamber, especially if it's on the tight side will cause stuck cases in carbine gas systems. This is where "2nd tier" companies got themselves into trouble. They used standard 223 chambers which lead to extraction problems. In response, they increased gas port diameter to increase extraction power. Combined with cases sticking in the chamber, this lead to the extractor slipping off the rim or worse, tearing the rim off.

The use of the 223 Wylde chamber specs has alleviated much of this problem. Matter of fact, almost no one uses the standard 223 chamber anymore. As good as the 223 Wylde chamber is, the 5.56 offers even better functional reliability for self loading rifles

That sounds like a BCM Mk12 SPR Mod 3x.:

Keep in mind that 18" rifle gas won't like wimpy ammo. But feed it decent quality stuff and you'll be fine.

I assume this means no wolf and save 223 loads for plinking? Should I just go with a 20 inch barrel or a mid length gas system ? I want a tack driver for 55-80ish gr but ill err on the side of reliability. Im a former AK guy making the switch and the AR is more complicated than the Russian cave man rifle.

No. It just means you have to be realistic and realize that cheap ammo isn't going to run as well. Nothing wrong with weak ammo if you don't mind practicing a few malf drills. I run cheap ammo from time to time. I just don't fret when my Colt, Noveske, or BCM chokes on a Wolf round.

Just save those high expectations for when you're shooting good ammo. Besides, you're not going to be tack driving anything with cheap ammo. Accurate ammo costs extra.

The BCM is very good. The Larue Stealth is awesome. Both have M4 ramps, and odd chambers kinda like the wylde or something mumbo jumbo. Whatever, it works. 18" rifle gas should be fine with any real ammo you can expect good accuracy, speed, and range from. Both should be reliable, IME, with hot milspec ammo.

I prefere the UBR from the stocks you mentioned.
