I'm fairly sanguine on the ban prospects. I just don't see it happening, at least not til after the 2014 elections. I believe enough of Team R will hold fast in the House and Senate to prevent a semi auto ban. Redistricting should give us enough of a cushion for the next decade or so, hence the "5 year" plan.

HK Guns,

I researched 338. Didn't seem to have as flat or far a trajectory as 300 Win Mag outside of 300 yards and it doesn't do anything 9.3 X 62 can't do inside that range. Am I wrong?

I'll have to second adding a .338 win mag. What it does better than the .300win mag past 300 yards is retention of energy. It hits as hard at 500 yards as the .300 at the muzzle. With the proper bullet/load it's more than effective and accurate out to 1200 yards or so. The difference in recoil between the 2 is really minimal too. A 250gr SMK and a healthy dose of IMR4350 or Retumbo will stop any game in North America and truck in a pinch :)

Only gun I would add to your list is a 7.5x55 Swiss (either 1911 or K-31, depending on how old you prefer as they both shoot great).

I suppose it all depends on what you intend to do with it and at what range you intend to do it.

At 500 yards a 180gr 300WM drops ~49" and has 1184 ft-lb's of energy. At 500 yards a 225gr 338WM drops ~46" and has 1928 ft-lb's of energy, a considerable difference. These are both loadings you can buy over the counter.....I've not yet reloaded either of these rounds but would expect the advantage to the .338 only increases with select hand loadings.

At least in the US the number of commercial loads for both of these rounds beat the 9.3x62 by a very wide margin, so it is beaten by both of the above in flexibility of ammo selection. As a comparison a 232gr 9.3x62 round drops 80" at 500 yards and retains only 643 ft-lb's of energy. - Kind of anemic in comparison.

I had to bust out the ballistics software to run some numbers, I don't have this stuff memorized, especially a primarily EU cartridge that you put forward as a comparator. I shoot 180gr 300WM and 225gr 338WM. Never shot the other so I picked one as close as possible to the 225gr 338WM.

300 win mag will be intended as an elk rifle here in the states and a light plains game rifle when I get the opportunity to go back to Africa. First time I went was just to look at the animals and take their picture. Next time...Springbok and Ostrich are mighty tasty!

Also looking at the Savage tactical set up (110BA) for homeland security purposes.

You don't suppose you'd like to adopt me, maybe? Or do you have sister I could marry? Or maybe you have a barn I could live in?

Terry

Heh the only sister I'd suggest marrying has a husband that could likely kick your @$$.

I'm not rich (well, my parents are but...) but I am methodical, hardworking, and have a highly developed (Prussian) sense of order.

5 year plan takes into account current income with future expected income. Anyway, thanks once again for the advice and (mostly) warm welcome.

Looks like Grassman took back his accusations of trolldom. We're all permitted to be wrong :)

"Looks like Grassman took back his accusations of trolldom. We're all permitted to be wrong "

It sort of takes away the attempted humor of my remarks, don't it? Now I look like an ass.

Not the first time, not the last, I'm sure.

The least he could have done was just use the strikeout function.

If you don't include some classics like the 44mag and 45-70, I truely believe you are missing out. Especially if you reload. I would seriously consider an old sharps or lever gun in 45/70. I know I'm partial to big bore (as you can see from my handle) but I have yet to take someone shooting and let them shoot my stainless SBH 7.5 44 mag or my 1895 in 45/70 and not have a big smile show up on their face. But I also don't have "safe queens". My guns shoot. All of them.

The SBH and 1895 are going to be on my hip and shoulder in less than 2 hours for a walkabout through hog country :)

To those who suggested 338wm be added to the list, after much thought and deliberation, I'm adding 325wsm. Yeah, I know, 8mm isn't as common and it doesn't hit QUITE as hard as a 338 but it's an itch I decided needed to be scratched (kind of like 9.3 X 62).

I will be handloading so even if it goes under as a calibre, I'm still going to be able to get ammo for it.

The platform will be a Browning X-Bolt White Gold Medallion. Don't forsee needing more than one quality rifle for 325 wsm and I like the stock design in both look and fit/feel.

It's on the next-year-purchase list.

What am I buying this year? I'll let you know as I pay for them (2 on layaway at the moment)

Good luck to you. Enjoyed reading of your plans, and the comments. My aims -- and means! -- are much more modest, but but if I had the means, I'm sure I'd expand my caliber footprint a bit more also. Have fun. Does $50k include safes for all those guns? ;)
