I just starting shooting a little over a year ago when I bought an Armi Sport 1858 2-band Enfield. In February I got a T/C caplock Hawken (.58 caliber).

I recently joined a local Izaak Walton club. Up until last month when I joined the club, the range I was shooting at did not allow offhand shooting. My club does allow it. So this morning was the first time I tried offhand shooting with my Hawken.

After three or four shots I got the hang of it.

Attached is my target. All shots were made at 25 yards, offhand. I used 60 grains of Goex FFG and a Hornady Great Plains bullet.

Next week I'll try shooting the Enfield offhand!

That's pretty dang good shooting for a first time off-hander - even at only 25yds. I've found that blck powder rifles are easier to shoot off-hand because of their weight & balance points.

A couple of tricks for off-hand shooting is to find your natural point-of-aim and then do not move your feet from that position until you're finished. Having a chair or stand to rest the rifle on between shots helps to let your arms rest between shots.

Thanks for the tip. I will try it the next time out.

The T/C Hawken is real nice to balance and shoot.

I have only been shooting blackpowder a little over a year and am "shooting" myself for not starting this hobby sooner!!
