looking for comments on a first time pistol or rifle for a 27 year old daughter who wants to learn to shoot, rifle, pistol? what cal .22 .22mag 38spl ,etc.

22 revolver.

If you scare them the first time, that's it. you ruined it for them for life. So don't risk it. Go with a 22 revolver and load it with 22 shorts.

+1 for the .22

Took my wife to the range a few weeks ago for the first time. I went so far as to buy a new Buckmark .22 auto for the occasion. We went over the 4 rules and loaded/unloaded a dummy round at home to make sure she understood the mechanism. We also found her dominant eye, and talked about sight picture, grip, and range etiquette before hand.

She had an absolute blast, and said she'd try it again. That was definitely the desired effect...

I'm going to recommend Ruger, for both a rimfire rifle (the 10/22) and pistol (MK III). Heck, even for the revolvers (Single-Six). It's hard to go wrong with a .22 these days - they're great for introducing new shooters, perfect for learning good basic habits which might be harder with a louder, heavier recoiling centerfire cartridge gun, and the way ammo is going, spending $15 for 550 rounds beats the heck out of $20 for 50 of 9mm (probably the cheapest, most common centerfire offering available right now).

And both the 10/22 and the MK III are pretty much endlessly modifiable. When you get tired of the original configuration, or your daughter wants something a little more "specialized", get online and order up any number of parts - from target barrels, new stocks, precision-made internals, you name it.

I'd start with a bolt action rifle in 22LR of any mainstream manufacturer, including picking up a well used one for about $100

Then move to a medium frame 4 inch barreled 357 but only using 38 specials in it. (with the possible exception of a ruger sp-101 with a 3 inch barrel, it is almost the weight of many medium framed guns)

if possible, put a .22LR handgun of some type inbetween those two. A nice Ruger Single Six or Ruger Bearcat would be good.

Discard all preconceived notions about what you think is best and fit the pistol to the person and not the person to the pistol for a first handgun. A properly fitting handgun will allow for quicker training, greater initial accuracy, easier handling of recoil and overall greater enjoyment of the shooting experience. Remember that unless the person has exactly the same hand size, finger length and pointing angle they won't be as comfortable with your gun as they would with something that fits them. Look at corneredcat.com for fitting instructions.

Similarly, a well fitting rifle would enhance the shooting experience for a beginner. Stock length and angle, reach to trigger, weapon weight all factor into whether the gun fits well. A .22 is a great choice because the recoil is minimal, the ammo is cheap and allows lots of shooting time and it's relatively accurate. My daughter's first .22 was a preban AR with a dedicated .22 upper, but her favorite .22 rifle is an old Remington single shot bolt gun that's older than me.

1. Ask her what she'd like to shoot. (Explain the attributes of each.)

2. Go to a gun store and have her pick up a bunch of guns for fit and preference.

3. Don't push he G27 on her.

An important question: Why does she want to learn?

Good luck to you and daughter.
