In the past year, my son has taken interests in shooting and hunting. I had built a 300 Blk pistol over the summer, which fit him pretty good from a rest. This morning was youth day in Virginia, which extends through tomorrow. Some factory 125 gr. Nosler BTs took care of his first ever deer on his first official hunt. He has tagged along but never took a gun before this morning. His first shot was a little too far back at 35 yards (the boy was shaking like a dog passing a peach seed). His second shot at about 60 yards was high and missed, his third shot lined up the red dot and made a lung shot. She expired about 10 seconds later. I just have got set up for reloading the 300 Blk and will be creating a nice deer load for under 100 yard shots. Those Noslers didn't perform as well as I expected, perhaps the 200-300 fps lost in my 8.5" barrel. Either way I'm proud as ever today. Going again this evening with a couple of his friends who don't have an opportunity to go with another adult.

Congrats to both of you. A first deer is always a very memorable occasion. He'll be proud to have put that food on the table!

Congrats! That's good stuff. I can't wait til my kids are old enough to take hunting. What did the NBT do to disappoint?

Just look at the smile on that young man! You both are so lucky to share this day. Congrats.

Tell him for me , nice deer and good job . I am sure both of you will remember this hunt forever .

The Noslers both passed through with only one shot showing expansion, very minor at that. Wounds looked like a FMJ round was used. Hardly any bloodshot on the surrounding tissue. Made a fairly clean hole in the lungs. I've seen the aftermath of a 30-30 and the 300 Blk needs a bit more tweaking to get to that level.

Ah, I see. When you get to hanloading maybe try a 30-30 RN bullet or anealing your bullet tips(before loading). Anealing takes less than 10 seconds and makes them expand better at lower velocities.

Congratulations to your son. He will bug you to take him hunting from now on. That's a good thing.
My granddaughter killed her 1st deer last Thanksgiving. She's hooked now.

If a ballistic tip won't expand, your velocity is too low. They usually expand too much for my desire. You may want to try Sierra's 125 gr. HP bullet. It works very well in a .30-30 T/C Contender with a 10" barrel.

Very cool!

For .300 BLK whitetail, I like the barnes TAC-TX 110gr's. Took a nice 7-point buck last year in the tidewater with them.

i have some Hornady 110 gr SP to play with next week, my reloading order just came to the house Friday. I have a feeling Santa is getting him a Ruger American in 300 Blk this year for some reason. I also think Santa charged it to my Visa as well. My AR might be picky with loads, but a bolt gun won't have a problem with feeding issues. At lower velocities from the pistol a varmint round shouldn't be as explosive. The TAC round is based on that principle. Apparently the 110 VMAX is a decent substitute for the more expensive TAC.

Here is an attachment of the exit hole that expanded. The bone is chipped and I would assume contributed to the hole/expansion. This was at around 60 yards, his 3rd shot and 2nd hit. Poor blood trail leading to the deer even though the chest cavity was full of blood. Heart was intact and in the freezer now (First heart in years that was not jello!). His first shot barely clipped the stomach and made a 1/4 inch slice, riding the tissue between its chest cavity and stomach. A lead tipped round in either SP or RN would be a wrecking ball at the ranges of the pistol, and probably made a bigger mess of the guts! Maybe I'm just used to more powerful rifles but the Ballistic tip didn't perform like I thought at probably 2,000-2,100 fps.

Great picture, congratulations to you both on successful hunt!

The 125 ballistics are actually stupidly tough little bullets, ive launched them from my 300wins at rediculous speed and haven had them come tottaly apart on anything but a shoulder to shoulder shot. The seem like a great bullet for the blackout, but likely wont deliver the violent expansion the breed is known for.

Ive still got a few from my last 300win episode, wqs gonna use them for Super pig rounds..got 125tnts for the rest.

Great Job!

The 110 Barnes TAC-TX mentioned was designed for the .300 Blackout and its lighter weight allows for more velocity, up to 2415 fps per Barnes loading data. That might give better expansion compared to the 125 BT the OP is using. I did not think Ballistic Tips were that tough, but stranger things have happened :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Nice! Congrats to the lad!

I see a couple of HD's lurking in the background, also nice! Raising the boy right!

I'm eventually going to try the TAC rounds, I've got a few pounds of IMR4227 and a new can of H110 to play with. And yes, there are a few Harley Davidsons in the background, there is also a Suzuki GSXR-600 hiding in there too!

Make me wonder if the light BT was designed with 3000ft/s MV in mind. I'm surprised the Cult of Barnes didn't make an appearance sooner, they always have a remedy for what ailes you. Need more penetration? Barnes! Need less penetration? Barnes! Need help deciding on whether to itemize your deductions this year? OMG, Barnes! Each bullet is milled on a CNC lathe ya know.

Maybe I'm just used to more powerful rifles but the Ballistic tip didn't perform like I thought at probably 2,000-2,100 fps.

I definitely wouldn't expect the same violence from that bullet at low velocities that we normally see at higher speeds. Have you run the ammo and pistol combo over a chronograph to see what velocity you're actually getting? Nosler says the Ballistic Tip is designed to expand from 1,800 FPS to 3,200 FPS.

I'd be curious to see what velocity you're actually generating.

Everything I've shot with a ballistic tip has been from my 7 mag, and at those velocities they come apart inside the animal and shower their lead cores all through the lungs. I usually see 30% weight retention and most of the time I don't get a pass through, but that's at the higher end of the velocity range. Did you find any lead or jacket fragments while you were gutting it?

Full penetration and no lead particles tells me you probably got decent performance from the bullet.

First deer! Wow what an experience for the both of you! Congrats to him!
As for you, I have one question. Why is there not blood on his face?! LOL!
STW

I know the velocity is lower than 7.62x39 rounds, 8.5" barrel but I was guessing at least 1,800 fps but closer to No signs of fragmentation at all. Both entrance holes were 30 cal size, the other exit was also 30 cal sized. The oversized exit hole took rib with it, internal damage was enough to kill obviously. No chrony but I might be able to get my hands on one soon. Velocity seems to be what crippled the performance. I think I still have the magnum mindset and not used to the terminal performance of a slower round. And for the no blood on his face, I'm waiting on his first buck to really get him.
