Fishing with an RPG?

I wonder if that was just the concussion of the RPG hitting the water/bottom or if it actually exploded? Can one of our RPG experts tell us of it would even detonate at that close of a range or is that within arming distance?

I can't get this video to load, but if it is the one that I saw, the first shot did not detonate. (too close to arm). The second one did detonate, and you can see the difference in the splash. Still only killed one sad little Afghani fish though.

Nuh-uh. No way was that piddly little splash the warhead going off.

I've made bigger waterspouts than that with fireworks I've bought in Wyoming. That was just the splash of the round hitting the water. If that sucker went off it would have drenched all involved, and probably moved a fair bit of mud from the bottom of the lake along with the water. That was probably a training round or if they really did waste a live round on this stunt it obviously didn't go off.

Which is probably a good thing.

The RPG-7 has a piezo-electric fuze, and is very quick and very sensitive. The reason for this fuze is that shaped charges (which is what the RPG 7 warhead is) are very sensitive to stand-off distance. They work best when detonated some distance before hitting the target. (The long, needle-like nose of the warhead is empty -- the shaped charge is in the back of the case.)

If it hits water, it ought to go off on the surface. The detonation would take place a few inches above the surface, in fact.

Fishing

After the war was over in Europe my brother sent a letter home asking for fishing equipment.After he got home we found out that they used Grenades for fishing in the rivers and after a while the Army stopped that because the explosians were disturbing the locals.

That is a noble way of using old, rotting munitions It should be legal. Too bad we don't have alot of surplus explosives lying around in America

forget the HEAT anti-tank shaped charge fishing idea I think the RPGs thermobaric warheads would work a lot better for bass fishing check these things out sometime, they are truly amazing. There's a good probability that those were in fact training rounds; remember, the RPG uses an "impulse engine", it burns all of it's propellant in a fraction of a second propelling a 2.2kg ammunition unit at 140 meters per second, that's 21,560 Joules which is a hell of a lot of kinetic energy, It would deposit all of that energy when it was only a few inches into the water.
