Watch it again..he said 'this is an armor piercing round' and then later 'it being an armor piercing', and IIRC 'this being made to penetrate armor'.
Trying to fudge their discription is futile. They clearly implied and SAID that it was an AP round which shows they are ignorant of the BMG.
And, the steel core of the ball is pretty tough stuff....tuff enough to stick halfway into 5/8 steel plate @100yds. Just rivets itself in while throwing the plate back a ways. Don't think water would bother it much.
Also, the AP penetrator is a WHOLE different matter. Those are tough customers and are undamaged after going through 1" steel @100yds. Water would not bother them at all unless it has some magical property that I am not aware of.
My water 'testing' failed to recover any bullets. There were holes punched in the bottom and broken rocks and such....but no fragments. I have recovered Ball cores after going through trees...and a few were bent. Especially the one that went through three feet of a cherry tree...end on...until it bent and deflected out the side. I split that log (18" or so in diameter and about 4 feet long) with a spotter-tracer that went in a foot before going off. Threw the log halfs several feet to each side. Nice effect!
You know, all this MythBuster BS is actually great for the 50 BMG cause! There are quite a few Politicians trying hard to get them banned as Unbelievably Powerful Destructive Devices...which they are not. They are just a big rifle and a bit more powerful than the 460 Weatherby and the like. Able to shoot down satellites in orbit! Penetrate armor at a mile! Down an airliner ar 40,000 feet!! No....
Of course, it can't do those things but...just between us gun fellows....it CAN do a bit more than the MB guys showed, if fed a stout bullet like most of us actually use.
You know, if someone is near Western PA and would like to do a real test of the water penetration, I'll supply the rifle and ammo....but not the target! It won't survive...
