I'm strongly considering this rifle in .223; I've read some are coming with barrels touching the stock. Are they supposed to be floated? Does the Tikka compare to a CZ 527?

@Newtosavage just picked up one that had the "tab" touching the barrel I think.....or some one did... honestly my brains a little busted right now....

Anyway, from what I remember reading it isn't much work to remove the tab if yours does end up with it.

Other than that all of the ones I've handled have been well made, with good fit and finish.

At the price they sell for fit and finish is excellent and on par with the two CZ rifles I own, a 550 American and 512.

I'd like to, however, I would like to know if the barrel is floated.

Take a dollar bill, wrap it around the barrel in front of the stock and slide it towards the receiver. If it gets no hangup until an inch or so from the action it's free floating...

Also, for what its worth, I've been looking at and talking to people who own tikkas for years, and I've only heard of ONE single rifle not being a laser accurate rifle. No other brand has that rep. I have a cz527, and it is one of my favorite rifles, but all the wood stocked tikkas I've held are just as nice, just a little more modern in design.

More modern in design doesn’t mean better. The 527 is CFR while the Tikka is push feed. The CZ action is more expensive to make than the Tikka action. Using the same analogy the Tikka is a more modern design than a Kimber, M70 and Montana. I’d rather have one of them than a Tikka.

I don't disagree, I am a big fan of crf rifles too, I was referring to stock design and ascetics. I would put a basic cz and a tikka in the same quality bracket though, my bias comes from the t3 stock fitting me as if it was custom made for me.

All four Tikkas I've owned have (both T3 and T3x's) have had a little plastic reinforcement tab that contacted the barrel about halfway down the forend. I'm not sure why it's there, but I took a dremel tool and worked it down on all my rifles. It only took 30 seconds or so. After that the whole barrel was perfectly free-floated and the accuracy on all four have been superb.

I have an older T3 and mine doesn’t have the tab. Not sure when they added that or why. I would also remove it. If your worried about the barrel being centered in the barrel channel, it will be. I’ve looked at dozens of tikkas and the fit and finish is always perfect.

I own both Tikkas and CZ's (3 - 527’s). Both are superb rifles and either would be a good choice. Aside from CRF vs PF, the biggest difference is the size of the actions. The CZ is a mini-Mauser design specifically built for cartridges of 223 length and shorter. The Tikka action is the same size for short action and 223 cartridges. This makes the CZ a slightly more compact rifle which may be an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you’re after. I’m not a big person, and like the smaller rifle for short cartridges. I’d handle both, and base my decision on which seemed the better fit.

The CZ has several options in 223. Carbine length (18” I believe), American (22”ish) and varmint (26”). I’m not sure what options Tikka offers.

Just a thought, but you may want to toss the howa mini into the mix as well, price range is similar and they are nice little rifles.

My Tikkas are older models; M595’s and M695’s so I can’t speak for the T3x. The one cailiber I have in common is 308. The CZ and 595 are tied for accuracy, but the Tikka is not nearly as picky about loads.
