I am used to seeing 99% of knife photos of peoples really nice, pretty knives. Some I am sure are for collecting, some are for someone to say I have a really cool knife, many of which are locked in safes or tucked in drawers or on closet shelves, some I am sure are displayed. And I myself have all I mentioned above so I am not picking at anyone.

I know many if not all of us carry folding pocket kinves that we use almost daily for something. [at least I do which is why I carry two. one to use a lot and one for emergency use only]

I live in a rural farming, hunting, fishing, anything outdoors community so it is not uncommon to see someone carrying a fixed blade knife, but still mostly pocket knives are carried.

I'd like you to post photos [FIXED BLADES ONLY PLEASE] of fixed blades knives that actually see use. It doesn't have to be daily use, could be the truck knife, camping, hiking, hunting knife. You know the knife you aren't afraid to used because you waited 2-3 years and spent hundreds of dollars on.

I didn't post a pic, cause I do not have one yet. BUT it will be here in a few days. I got a Ka Bar 1202 used from someone that is to be my outdoor knife, mostly hiking, camping and hunting chores.

Please make it interesting with any history of the knife you picture and why you like it so, what your opinion of its strengths and weaknesses are. etc.

PS, I'm a newbie, this is my 1st post on highroad. I'll post a pic after I receive my Ka Bar.

NO stock photos please, and include your sheath in the pic.

I'll play...

This is my first fixed blade knife. Found it sticking hilt up in the mud while clam digging with my dad over 35 years ago. It's been used for everything a young boy could thing to do... hammer, pry bar, and even skinned my first deer with it. A careful look will see where I scratched my name on the blade as youngster. Went on camp outs, rode in the tackle box, opened paint cans and still has an edge that will do serviceable duty. The sheath is one found at a garage sale ages ago and represents the best 25 cents I probably spent as youth... nothing else seem to have survived from that time. It's not the best steel, nor the prettiest in the collection, but it sits in a spot of prominence in the safe.

this is my field knife. Good for an all around hunting blade. It has a brother that is a folder, got the set for $9.95.

I got this blade as a gift a few years ago not even knowing it was a hog blade. I'll be carrying this if / when I go hog hunting.

My do-everything knife. It is a Fallkniven F1, though the makers marking is pretty worn.

It has done everything from removing old carpeting, cutting down boxes, food prep, carving, making traps, fire prep, batoning, plus many, many other uses.

No real history too it. I bought it a few years back and it ended my search for my "perfect" outdoors knife. In fact it is my only knife now, well except for my SAK and a Leatherman that I will carry for the tools mostly.

The sheath isn't stock. It is a custom JRE Cricket made to be worn horizontal at the small of my back.

what your opinion of its strengths and weaknesses are. etc.

For me the strengths are the Laminated VG-10 steel takes a serious beating. The convex edge is super easy to maintain , and the edge geometry allows this knife to slice better than a knife with a nearly 3/16" thick spine should.

Some find the handle a little small for their hands. It fits mine perfect.:)

This is one I carry

I do not see anyone carrying fixed blades but it is what I prefer.
4" blade of 5/32" thick ATS-34, 8.5" overall and I made it, the sheath and the stainless pen too.

@ USAF Vet, have you actually used that knife on an animal yet? If that knife holds an edge long enough for you to skin and gut an entire deer I will be shocked.

Gerber

Well, there's this Gerber Shorty that I picked up in 1971.

Crummy picture in poor lighting.

Better picture, same crappy light.

That Shorty went abroad with me when I spent a year at sea. Surprisingly good knife for sea duty, in spite of its being non-stainless tool steel. Kept it clean and dry, and it did its job.

The Muskie in the second picture has also seen very little use. Mostly kitchen duty.

[The little dagger you see there (Gerber Guardian) is basically unused. Carried it on and off in 1982 & 1983, but I think the only actual work it's ever done was salami and tomato duty.]

This the knife I have been carring everyday for the last year or so. I use it for everything. I do remodeling for a living. This knife has skinned 3 deer, 1 Auodad, 2 hogs, cut carpet, sheetrock, formica, shingels, scraped caulking off of cement block, cut shims, deburred copper pipe, you name it I have probably cut it. Hell I even cut my hand out of a garage door spring with this knife. I have several custom made knives made by the same person. All of them were purchased to be used and abused. browningbdaedc003.jpg

Only squirrels so far. Hey, the OP didn't ask for GOOD fixed blades you actually use :)

This is my favorite fixed blade, all around camp knife...

but this one is rapidly catching up and may over take the number one spot.

I guess this qualifies as a fixed blade. I occasionally carry this, but not too often anymore. I don't even think it's legal in MI.

I don't carry a fixed blade right now, cause I refuse to buy one when I can make them... and I end up selling the ones I make... Go figure...

But great pics guys! And JBKEBERT, I love and HATE that story about cutting yourself out of the garage door... makes my knees hurt just thinking about it...

I guess you'd have to search to find pics of me with my WWII.

"Make it interesting"?! How would we know what you find interesting?

John

I carry these when I'm hunting (only one or the other of the Canadian knives) and only the Gerber Pixie at the bottom when I'm just fishing. 21o4f7.gif
You'll have to forgive the German folder. It was my Dad's and I only use the gut ripper-otherwise it gets all greasy and too hard to clean.

Pixie!

Hey, Doug's got a Gerber Pixie!

I haven't seen mine for most of 40 years. I suspect I gave it to my mom back in 1972.

Picked it up in Germany (Ramstein AFB base exchange) in 1971.

I can't remember whether I stole the Pixie from Dad at Elmendorf AFB in 1971 or bought my own but it dates from about then.

Cold Steel Master Hunter.....and the best bone saw ever, Gerber, too bad they don't make them anymore. Only cuts on the pull stroke, cut like chainsaw teeth.

Dear John

Interesting? Just some details of it or your usage of it.

And thanks everyone! The pics are great and encouraging. I was begining to think fixed blades were a thing of the past as far as being actually used. Heck I posted this same question on another forum and someone pictured a Randal that they actually camp use! I thought everyone these days collected and locked up their Randals... lol

I've used the HI WW II 16.5" and 19" Chitlangi to chop a bunch of foliage, up to smallish trees. Picture of me somewhere with a huge stack of brush and my WWII.

These pics are from when I first finished it... so it is quite a bit more worn now, but here is the fixed blade that I carry everyday.

Horizontal on my belt. Now I put it just to the left hand side of my belt buckle, for a cross draw.

This is an import from FROST Cutlery named Deer Valley Skinner. I enjoy the custom touches and extra keen edge. This knife skinned 3 Maryland deer last year.

This is an older MONARCH skinner from the early 1970's. It has skinned many animals. Japanese built and a genuine KEEPER!

This is my KaBar which my brother bought at the BX located within DaNang Air Base, Viet Nam. He bought it in 1968 and gave it to me in 1971. Had it ever since. Years ago, I went on a week long back pack hunt for mule deer in Colorado high country. To save on weight, I brought no tent. My KaBar knife, pine limbs, and some twine built a dandy shelter. I skinned and quartered my buck with it, too.

This is my FAVORITE fixed blade knife: Schrade Old Timer Golden Spike. Its made in USA but the imported Taylor knife seems identical to me. I like everything about this knife, shape, balance, weight, keen edge.
