go to sixguns.com and pull up "mr. keith's corner". select the june 1932 american rifleman. read the first paragraph of page 26. then go back to the main page and go into "gallery of great grips". you will see elmer's relief-cut grips that fill the palm swell.

I have a pair of Eagle grips for a SBH that are a lot like what you're talking about. They aren't quite right for me. I have reshaped them a bit. The palm swell on these grips doesn't work for me.
My suggestion would be to get a Pachmayr grip. It comes in one piece, so cut it down the seam to make a pair of scales, then replicate those scales in smooth dark walnut.
For years this has seemed like a good idea to me, but I've never acted on it.

The reason why Ruger cut it square.

I have shot Colt SAA that shot 45LC not 44MAG
the reason Ruger made The New Model Black Hawk
was to keep you from crushing your finger back of the guard.
Try 44 Special & let the Revolver roll back in your
hand. Or do what everyone else does & put some
Pachmyers & shoot Man sized loads of 44 Magnum!

The 45 Colt & 44 Special are little light loads compared
to the Mighty 44 Mag. Why do we keep our gun boxes?
so we can keep or Factory grips in wax paper to put on
before we sell it again. With so many custom rubber grips I
have not heard any one complain about the super Black hawk
for many years. I had a trigger job done back about 20 years
ago I have taken 7 Bucks & 2 Does all under 100 yards using the
Speers 225 Half jacket HP. I found a new box at the last Gun Show
I wrote Speers and asked if they had plans to make them again.

Nope it's to cheap to make the plated ones to bad they were a great line
of bullets for 357 & 44 Magnums.

Go on EBay and type in ruger superblackhawk grips, look at the Jay Scott and the sile style, I have the standard BH style of these on my single six and ROA and have used the grips on my son's BH 45 with Ruger only loads, they fill in that area behind the guard and offer a larger grip area.

Murph, thanks a heap for the info on that great sight for some interesting .44Mag reading. I read that paragraph and it gave me a lot more info and ideas than the pictures. The picturs don't really show much of anything due to the lighting. But I think I get the idea behind the assymetrical shaping to fill the palm better. And I can see that I'll be returning to that bookmarked site to read a lot of the other articles just for intrest. Thanks in advance for a whole lot of pleasantly wasted time! ! ! ! :D

Robhof, I found two sets of the Jay Scott grips for a surprisingly cheap price. I'm going to get a set just for the heck of it to try out against my custom made set(s).

I took the SBH apart today so I could have the frame in hand and sketched some outlines to start playing. But the wood cutting will need to wait for next week since I've got a motorcycle race to ride in this sunday (as in tomorrow). In fact as the registrar I really should get off THR and get my paperwork printed up for tomorrow before I end up having to stay up past midnight.... :D

Right now I'm likely going to do two sets. One along the line of the Hogue wood grips and another along the line of the standard grips but much fatter with this palm swell idea. Much of my issue with the stock grips is related to the lack of "fill" in the upper grip area. I'm thinking that by making a fatter set I may get around that aspect while still retaining the classic look of the grips and gun.

There WILL be pictures once I get somthing to take pictures of.
