Home Invasion Suspect Shot Dead By Neighbor

Jason Wheeler
Reporting

(CBS4 News) KENDALL A home invasion robbery has turned deadly for one of the bad guys, while a second suspect was captured and a third remains loose.

It all started around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday night the trio of armed home invaders knocked on the door of 15980 SW 76th Street in the community of Lago Mar. When the victim opened the door, the three armed men forced their way in with a gun to the victim’s head.

The victim’s girlfriend was in another room. When she realized what was going on, she quickly ran out of the back of the house with her cell phone and called police. Then she ran to her neighbor’s home for help.

That neighbor then grabbed a gun and ran next door to help. At some point however, he was confronted by the 3 armed suspects and there was an exchange of gunfire.

One suspect was hit and he died on the scene.

Another suspect was quickly captured by a MDPD K9 officer, but a third however, managed to elude police and is still at large.

Officers have also recovered at least one knife and several guns from the scene. It's evidence, police say, that was dropped by the suspects when they tried to getaway.

Tragically, when the neighbor ran out of his home with his gun, his son also ran out of the house to help while holding a butcher knife. The boy's 12 year old sister also ran out of the house and was accidentally cut by the brother holding the knife. She sliced an artery and was rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery.

Miami-Dade Homicide detectives are presently investigating this case.

WOW.... look at the leasons learned:

Armed law abiding citizen a better response to ongoing crime that police officers on call.

The boy's 12 year old sister also ran out of the house and was accidentally cut by the brother holding the knife. She sliced an artery and was rushed to the hospital to undergo surgery.
Accidents occur with things other than firearms too (even when a firearm is owned).

Hoo RAH!

Primary lesson: Don't open the door without identifying the person.

Question: Why does the press think it's appropriate to publish the victim's address??? They sure wouldn't do that for a rape victim! I think it's unnecessary and outrageous.

Emphasis mine. That's the most awesome line I've read all week.

The first part isn't necessarily true. They can be better, or they can screw up, sometimes in a significant manner as here.

Just how was the neighbor's response better for the 12 year old girl who wasn't even in danger before the attempt to render aid?

By the way, not an accident. He wasn't even in the fight and he sliced his sister?

I am unpleasantly surprised that they included the address of the home invasion. That serves no purpose in the article and could result in unpleasant repercussions.

It would seem the responding neighbor has better combat skills than he does parenting skills....

The kids should have absolutely remained inside the house with 911 on the line, or at very least, with the phone close at hand.

Were I their dad, we'd be having a very serious talk, later on. And not one they'd enjoy, especially after what occurred.

Other than that, +1 to the neighbor, for his response and intervention.

This is why I paid to have 4" steel security doors installed - no one is forcing their way in here.

That's a good neighbor!

Kudos to the neighbor.

I have to question the writer on the importance of including the injury to the daughter. Seems like they went out of thier way to find something negative about the neighbor.

Good Day,
It is possible, the young lady, in the excitement, ran into the brothers knife. Depending, of course, upon how he was holding the weapon.
Best,
Rob
