ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A resident turned the tables on three men who burst into an Orange County home Wednesday night. He shot and killed one of the robbers and another suspect was stabbed, but got away along with the third home invader.

Six room mates living in the house on Muscatello Street in Orange County told deputies that three men broke in and one immediately fired one round to let their victims know they meant business.

"I was in my spa and I heard this muffled cap sound and I knew it couldn't be fireworks," said Bob Whalen, a neighbor.

Investigators said it's unclear what happened next. One occupant was reportedly hiding in a closet. When one of the bad guys tried to open the door, the occupant fired his gun through the door. The suspect was shot and killed.

Deputies said a second intruder was stabbed, but he ran away before deputies arrived on scene.

"We'd be going out on a limb claiming that it was as it appears to be at this point, until further investigation is made and homicide is able to speak to everybody individually to put together a picture of what we have," said Cmdr. Tom Cockriel of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they did not believe drugs played a role in the home invasion.

I always get a smile on my face when I read about how someone had the forethought & the means to defend themself and none of the innocents were maimed or killed. It's too bad that one of the baddies got killed but he instigated the life/death situation and left his intended target no choice.
In way too many scenarios the perp has his way with the victims and all the victims can do is hope that it won't turn deadly.

I'm not too comfortable with the resident firing through the closet door. How did he know who was on the other side of it? Coulda been one of his roomies checking to see if he was okay.
Maybe these guys should work up a safety drill of some sort. Lucky it turned out as it did, and not worse.

"Deputies said they did not believe drugs played a role in the home invasion."

That makes me breathe easier. Too many of these "righteous shootings" turn out to be between drug dealers.

Depends on the closet door. When I was a kid, we had these louvered folding doors on our closets. From the inside, you could easily stalk your prey (read: little brother), just by looking through the louvers.

Would it matter? If you've got anything in your house that belongs to you, legal or illegal, and someone breaks in to take it from you and possibly do you harm in the process, how is it not your right to defend your home and life!!!!!?????!!!!!
Self defense is a human right.

It is a shame the media/cops may be able to taint a legit home defense shooting by calling it a "drug related." It makes it sound shady- like these guys had it coming (a break in).

Honestly, a group of criminals can hit anyone's house anytime. You could get a group that kicks in the door of the wrong house. We always need to be ready.

Stabbed?

'Scuse me?

He's got a gun. He shoots a guy through a closet door.

And then . . .

. . . he stabs another guy?

Bayonet on his pistol?

Using rifle with bayonet instead of pistol?

I can't get a good fix on the scenario.

Waiting for more details.

Well, thee info we have is that another assailant was stabbed, may not have been by the same resident. The whole story should be out shortly I hope.

As BuckOO says, what makes you think the cops(read "Good Guys")are the only ones that get the address wrong???

I am sure that someone didnt gently try to open the closet door. I think its safe to assume there was a lot of yelling and such going on. He was just as likely to know that it was a BG trying to force the door open as he was to not know who was on the other side.

Cutter:

It was another resident that was wrestling with an attacker in the bathroom. Res pulled a pocket knife and after some tactical demonstrations :) convinced the attacker to go else where.

Ditzy reporter of course had to throw more garbage into the mix: "Now we just have to figure out why the 18 y/o resident had an AK47 at his disposal."

Well Duh, its obvious why he had it!

And "The five men and one woman who live there, most of whom are students at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute," Word is they had nice cycles at their house - maybe the bad guys wanted a ride? Dang bikers!
