HEADLINE: Shooting, shopping land man in jail

BYLINE: AARON QUINN; Herald Staff Writer

DATELINE: MANATEE

BODY:
A man who shot at a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot early Monday was arrested 30 minutes later when he returned to the store to do some shopping.

John Leonard Tierney, 52, of Parrish, was arrested on charges of attempted murder at about 4 a.m. Monday. No one was injured in the shooting. Authorities say Tierney confessed that he shot at two men in self-defense. Manatee County Sheriff's deputies said Tierney admitted to firing two shots in the air and one at the ground during an altercation that started in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart near State Road 70 and U.S. 301.

Deputies said Karrie Sanderson and Rodney McCullough approached Tierney in Sanderson's car between where Tierney parked and the Wal-Mart entrance at about 3:30 a.m. Sanderson told Tierney that Tierney almost hit McCullough in the parking lot with his car, a sheriff's report stated.

Tierney told deputies he apologized to Sanderson but Sanderson persisted chastising him. Tierney said Sanderson threatened to beat him and made a volley of expletives.

Deputies say Tierney told them he went back to his car for fear Sanderson and McCullough would damage it. Tierney said Sanderson and McCullough circled around him in Sanderson's car.

Then, authorities said, Tierney pulled his 9 mm handgun from his backseat.

"The first shot went in the air," said Dave Bristow, spokesman for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. "Then the other two went in the side of (Sanderson's) car."

Tierney claimed he saw Sanderson and McCullough reaching for something near the floorboard of their car, the report stated. He said he feared they had a gun and would shoot at him. After firing the second and third shots, Tierney said he drove south on U.S. 301 to escape the confrontation.

Tierney returned to the Wal-Mart later and deputies arrested him.

The store's assistant manager Keltie Christian said about 40 customers were evacuated when deputies spotted Tierney in the store.

"A manager had already seen him and his description fit what police had," Christian said.

Tierney was taken to Manatee County jail, where he remained Tuesday without bond.
