LAKE CITY, Fla. - Columbia County authorities are continuing their investigation into death of a 75-year-old Lake City man who shot and killed himself after a sheriff's deputy shot him in the leg.

The victim has been identified as Charles W. Seifert Jr..

Columbia County Sheriff's Deputy Cecil Brownfield was responding to a panic alarm at the house in the Picadilly Park subdivision at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when he spotted the man leaning against a tree, Capt. Jim Wells said.

When Brownfield left his patrol car, Seifert picked up a pistol and began waving it around.

The deputy went back to his car and called for backup.

When the man pointed his gun at Brownfield, he fired one shot.

"When the man went down, he took the weapon he had and fired a round into his head," Wells said.

The deputy was not hurt.

Neighbors told investigators that the man lived in the neighborhood, Wells said.

Brownfield has been placed on administrative duty while the shooting is being investigated.

I'm guessing he had something to do with the panic alarm, huh?
