So I noticed in a boating flyer that flares are available in 12 gauge. Could you use these in a shotgun? Does anyone know how long they are? Also, (and it would be a horrible idea) is there anything preventing someone from shooting a few rounds of birdshot through a plastic flare gun?

Really, really, really bad ideas on both counts.

A standard shotgun shell would definitely blow up a plastic flare gun- that's why flare shells are a good bit shorter than standard shotgun shells, the flare guns have shorter chambers too.

Flares have a bad habit of sticking in standard shotgun barrels- notice how much longer a shotgun barrel is than a flare gun barrel? And flare guns don't have chokes either. I've been told it's an interesting experience to have a flare burn itself out while stuck in your shotgun barrel, it makes a pretty red glow as it heats the barrel. 'Course, it also ruins the barrel.

I know these are bad ideas.. What i'm wondering is there some kind of safety that prevents you from doing either of these?

The only one that matters, the one 'twixt your ears.

Physically there is nothing stopping you from shooting the flare in a shotgun.

The flare guns chamber is too short for a shotgun shell, at least on the flare gun I have on my boat (yes i measured out of curiosity)

Not every stupid idea has a built in safety.
And this is really a stupid idea.

Watch the barrel glow? Try watching the barrel melt!
