The newer ranch model mini-14s came with new ghost ring aperture sights and scope ring options. I remember reading somewhere that the new ranch models' sights cannot be taken off in order to install an aftermarket flash hider or any other kind of device that goes on the muzzle of the gun.

Is this true?

You can always have a gunsmith profile and thread the muzzle to take an AR-15 flash suppressor, but that's a lot more expensive than simply replacing the front sight assembly (a la the Eagle HK-style front sight/flash suppressor combo, which may be what you had in mind?)

The front sight on the old mini does come off, but I have read that it is a royal pain in the kiester to get it off (VERY tight fit that usually requires penetrating oil and an improvised slide-hammer on the barrel).

Just pulled my front sight off last week. . . going to chop and thread for a break, and moving the sight back on the barrel.
The stupid thing was a royal pain in the ass to get off. . . penetrating oil, mild heat, and a wrench you don't care about to slide behind the sight and beat on. It took myself and a buddy (helps to have more hands to hold and beat the thing) about thirty minutes to get it off. Since the barrel is getting shrotened anyway, it didn't really matter except for the fact that we wanted to keep the sight and it was easier dealing with a longer piece than a short stub (hitting yourself with the hammer is easier when you only have a 4" piece to hold!). Have fun. . . :cuss:
