If I understand this correctly, a plain muzzle will have the most flash, a muzzle brake much less, and the flash suppressor the least.

What I'm curious about it is how each effect the sound/noise and recoil...

There are exception I'm sure but most muzzle brakes I've seen in use have more flash, not less. They can be rather loud too, compared to a plain barrel or one with a flash hider.

Ok, I was thinking that in terms of muzzle flash, from least to most, it's;

Flash Suppressor
Muzzle Brake
Plain Muzzle

Is that not right?

Bare muzzle has the most flash. Some muzzle brakes are better at breaking up the flash than others, but all do this to some degree. Muzzle brakes generally increase the sound heard (but not the total amount of sound generated), because of the gasses directed up and to the sides.

Only muzzle brakes, or compensators, effect recoil.

And if it was not for the '34 NFA you would have a muffler on the end of your rifle that would eliminate flash and reduce sound. Not to mention increase accuracy and muzzle velocity while decreasing felt recoil.

The gun and ammunition Glossary on my website has definitions for all of these terms, and a few more :)
